Job summary

TCHC Group Limited is seeking a Functional Skills English Tutor to cover maternity leave at Thurrock GAPS, delivering Entry Level 1–3 and Level 1 & 2 Functional Skills English to small groups (up to 12 learners). Working hours 8.30 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours weekly.

The role emphasises differentiation, creative delivery, and ongoing assessments, with support from a Quality Assurance Team and safeguarding commitments.

Qualifications

  • AET/CERTED/PGCE or other relevant teaching qualifications (Essential).
  • English: Grade C/4 or above or Functional skills level 2 (Essential).
  • Experience teaching learners with diverse abilities or learning needs (Essential).
  • Knowledge of EHCPs (desirable).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement schemes of work that support individual learning and meet delivery standards.
  • Create and execute innovative lesson plans and group activities.
  • Deliver sessions for groups per the curriculum, setting clear objectives and targets.
  • Utilise resources effectively to support learners with high needs, including ADHD and autism.
  • Evaluate learners' English skills using diagnostic tests and mock assessments.
  • Maintain accurate records of progress tracking and documentation.

Areyou an experienced educator with a passion for supporting learners with SpecialEducational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)? Do you understand the differencebetween mainstream teaching and working with high-needs learners in a classroomsetting?

At Thurrock GAPS, we deliver tailored education to young people with arange of complex needs, including global developmental delay, Down syndrome,dyslexia, autism, ADHD, severe learning difficulties, and social communicationchallenges. Our learners work at a slower pace and often require additionalsupport with communication and emotional regulation.We are currently seeking a Functional Skills English Tutor to deliver EntryLevel 1–3 and Level 1 & 2 Functional Skills English in small group settings(up to 12 learners). This is not a mainstream role — it requires someonewho is patient, adaptable, and confident in managing a classroom of learnerswith diverse and high needs.

Aprofessional and responsible individual for planning and teaching theFunctional Skills curriculum, who ensures differentiation is evident.

This willinclude:

  • FunctionalSkills English Level 1to Level 2
  • FunctionalSkills English Entry Level 1 to 2

Yourdelivery will be creative and engaging to ensure individuals achieve their aimsin all subjects. You will be supported by a Quality Assurance Team that isresponsible for leading the team to drive up quality, reaching and exceeding KPIsand promoting our ethos for continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Experienceof teaching learners with various abilities or learning needs (Essential)

Main Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement schemes of work that supportindividual learning and meet delivery standards.
  • Create and execute innovative lesson plans andgroup activities.

  • Utilise resources effectively to support learnerswith high needs, including ADHD, Autism, and other learning differences.
  • Evaluate learners' English skills using diagnostictests and mock assessments.
  • Perform initial and ongoing assessments to trackprogress and development.
  • Relate subject matter to life and work withpractical examples.
  • Encourage and support learners to aid theirprogress.
  • Maintain accurate records of progress tracking anddocumentation.
  • Ensure learners are well-prepared for exams.
  • Handle administrative tasks, including planning,logging results, and providing feedback.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Assurance team tomaintain delivery standards and attend standardisation meetings.
  • Keep personal CPD updated according to FunctionalSkills requirements.
  • Safeguard learner welfare and adhere toSafeguarding and Prevent policies.
  • Undertake additional duties as required, suited toexperience and qualifications.

Note: These responsibilities serve as an initial outlinefor the tasks that the post holder will initially be expected to perform.Changes may occur over time to accommodate evolving job requirements and adaptto shifting circumstances.
