Firefly New Media LTD in Consett is looking for a full stack developer to own production code, shipping weekly and delivering results across our sites and platform. You will work across the stack with TypeScript, React, Node and SQL, building for local neighbours and small businesses.

We offer a hybrid setup with 37.5 hours, a starting salary from £27,300, 28 days holiday, a pension, a laptop and access to AI tooling, plus a training budget for conferences and courses.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain public magazine sites and fireflynewmedia.com using React, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind.
• Develop the magazine.ad editorial platform and editors' admin tools.
• Work with PostgreSQL (Drizzle) on Railway with backups and monitoring.
• Create automation and AI tooling using Claude API/Code in daily work and product.
• Deliver client websites from brief to launch and ongoing care for the first year of ownership.

Job description

Firefly New Media publishes Consett Magazine and a network of local magazines in print and online, and builds websites, branding, digital campaigns and AI-driven automation for local businesses. Almost everything we run is software we wrote ourselves: the magazine sites, the magazine.ad editorial platform, the advertising tools and the automations that keep a small team on top of a lot of work.

We are hiring a full stack developer to own that code with us. This is a real engineering job in a small company, not a support role: you will ship to production every week and see the result in print and on the street.

What you will work on

• The public magazine sites and fireflynewmedia.com: React, TypeScript, Vite and Tailwind on the front, Node and Express behind
• The magazine.ad editorial platform, where every story in every title now arrives, and the admin tools the editors use
• PostgreSQL with Drizzle, deployed on Railway, with backups, monitoring and the boring parts done properly
• Automation and AI tooling: we use Claude Code and the Claude API in daily work and in the product, and you will build with them
• Client websites for local businesses, from brief to launch to the first year of care

Who we are looking for

• Two or more years building and shipping web applications, or a portfolio that proves the same
• Comfortable across the stack: TypeScript, React, Node, SQL, and happy to learn what you do not know yet
• Someone who writes clearly, tests their own work, and asks before assuming
• Interested in local news, small businesses and the North East. You will be building for neighbours
• Based within reach of Consett. We work together in person part of the week and remotely the rest
• The right to work in the UK. We are not able to sponsor visas

• From £27,300 a year, which is £14.00 an hour and 10% above the National Living Wage, rising with experience. Reviewed every April in line with the new rate, so the 2027 review is already in the diary
