About the role

DMG Media is in search of an experienced developer to join our distributed development team in delivering new features, functionality, and maintenance for our enterprise-level WordPress sites and related services. As a developer for DMG Media, you will primarily focus on product development and maintenance for inews.co.uk, but from time to time, you may also work on shared services that support one or many of our sister brands.

At DMG Media, you will become part of an established technology team where everyone can create and advance new ideas. Our dynamic, adaptable structure allows developers the freedom to build and create software that is highly effective and purpose-built, without the typical burdens of traditional enterprise-level organizations.

This is a hybrid role with the option to work from our offices in Kensington, London.

Key Responsibilities

1. Maintain and develop new features for our enterprise-level WordPress property, inews.co.uk
2. Contribute to and maintain shared plugins for all DMG Media’s WordPress properties
3. Monitor and improve response times, database query times, and core web vital scores.
4. Participate in discussions about technology choices based on business value, scalability, maintainability, and project delivery performance
5. Independently prioritize and manage work with little direction, while adhering to project timelines in a fast-paced environment
6. Debug and troubleshoot website issues raised by our editorial and support staff

Required Skills:

• 8+ years of experience with WordPress development
• Excellent understanding of the WordPress and Gutenberg ecosystem and development best practices
• Experience in creating custom Gutenberg blocks, custom RSS feeds, and WP-JSON API endpoints.
• Expertise with modern performant HTML, CSS, and PHP
• Strong understanding of Git and VCS principles.
• Knowledge of Agile methodology and project planning tools like JIRA
• Capability to see a full-stack project from beginning to end independently
• Understanding and knowledge of Core Web Vitals and their importance
• Excellent communication skills for a remote, distributed team
• Good understanding of Chrome DevTools for debugging front-end issues
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Experience with the WordPress VIP platform
• Enterprise experience building WordPress at scale – Edge and object Caching, Query optimization, and WP Cron
• Knowledge of monitoring tools such as New Relic and Kibana
• Experience with Typescript / Webpack
• Knowledge and use of WP-CLI and creating custom commands
• Integrating and using AWS services (S3, Lambda, EC2, API Gateway)
• Knowledge and experience developing for and publishing to Apple News
• Knowledge and use of CI tools such as CircleCI, GitHub Actions, and TeamCity
• Experience writing bash or Python scripts on an ad-hoc basis
• Familiarity with integrating subscription platforms like Piano.io or Zephr
• Willingness to travel to London for team meet-ups as needed
