Job summary

Aldergrove House, a small UK practice, seeks a seasoned frontend engineer to build public-facing surfaces using Next.js, React 19, and Tailwind. Comfort with server components and polyglot tooling is valued; ability to adapt to Elixir or Rust tasks is expected.

You’ll own features end-to-end from brief to production, collaborate with designers, and review code for accessibility and performance budgets in a collaborative Cambridge-based studio.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of production TypeScript and modern React experience.
• A visual eye strong enough that your engineering reviews highlight design issues too.
• Reading comfort in at least one non-JS language (Elixir, Rust, Python, Go).
• Written-first disposition — we review in prose, not emoji.

Aldergrove House is a small UK practice building digital work for firms whose standards sit outside the usual tempo of the industry — websites, operating systems, and bespoke software, often for the same client over several years. This role writes the surfaces of that work: the pages a client’s customers see, the forms they fill in, the interactions that make a product feel considered.

We’re a polyglot practice. Most of our client-facing work ships in Next.js + React 19 + Tailwind, but a given month might also involve Phoenix LiveView or a Rust → Wasm component embedded in an otherwise JS surface. Specialists are welcome; adaptable generalists are more useful.

What you’d do

The first reading

Every application is read by a partner, not screened out by a filter.

A partner reads what you sent. You hear back within five working days — either an invitation to speak, an honest refusal with a short reason, or an ask for a specific thing we need to decide.

The conversation

A proper meeting, not a screening call.

Two partners, you, a shared agenda sent twenty-four hours in advance. We talk about the work you have done, how we would work together, and the questions you have brought with you.

A short piece of work

Role-dependent. If it looks like work, we pay for it.

For technical and craft roles, a short brief returned in your own time. The brief is representative of what the house actually does — no synthetic puzzles. If the task reads as commercial-length work, we pay you a day rate for the time.

The final sitting

You meet all three readers of the house.

The three partners who run the practice sit with you. The decision is usually made in the room; where it is not, we tell you when to expect a reply.
