Job summary

SILA Linguists is a language services company recruiting freelance Malay interpreters and translators for legal, business, education and healthcare work, remotely or on site in the UK.

As a Malay linguist you will interpret between English and Malay in diverse settings, translate documents, and maintain confidentiality while supporting a flexible freelance schedule across remote and on-site assignments with DBS check and UK work rights.

Qualifications

• Native or near-native fluency in Malay and English (spoken and written).
• A recognised interpreting or translation qualification (e.g., DPSI or DPI) or equivalent experience.
• Membership of CIOL, ITI or NRPSI is welcome but not required.
• Indonesian is an advantage; Jawi script is welcome.
• A current DBS check, or willingness to obtain one, for assignments requiring it.
• The right to work in the UK for on-site assignments.

Responsibilities

• Interpret between English and Malay in business, legal, education and medical settings.
• Translate Malaysian and Bruneian documents, using Malaysian terms unless asked otherwise.
• Interpret accurately and impartially, maintaining confidentiality.
• Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, particularly for medical and legal bookings.
• Work remotely by video or telephone, or on site at the client's premises.
• Transcribe and translate audio/video recordings if you have transcription skills.

SILA Linguists is recruiting freelance Malay interpreters and translators for legal, business, education and healthcare work, remotely or on site.

Malay (Bahasa Melayu) is the national language of Malaysia and Brunei and an official language of Singapore. It is close to Indonesian, though vocabulary and spelling differ. Many clients are students, professionals and families from Malaysia, and much of the work involves business, legal and academic documents as well as interpreting.

Assignments include university and education matters, business meetings, legal and immigration work, and medical appointments. Translators work on contracts, certificates, academic records and marketing material.

Responsibilities

• Interpret between English and Malay in business, legal, education and medical settings.
• Translate Malaysian and Bruneian documents, using Malaysian rather than Indonesian terms unless asked.
• Interpret accurately and impartially, following the professional code of conduct and keeping all information confidential.
• Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, particularly for medical and legal bookings.
• Work remotely by video or telephone, or on site at the client's premises, arriving prepared and on time.
• Transcribe and translate audio and video recordings, such as interviews and calls, if you have the skills for transcription work.
