SILA Linguists is seeking freelance Czech interpreters and translators for education, family, healthcare, employment and legal assignments across the UK. You will work on remote video/phone bookings or on-site visits in diverse settings, with flexible scheduling.

Native or fluent Czech and English are required, plus an interpreting qualification (e.g., DPSI/DPI) or equivalent experience. Romani or Slovak language skills are a plus.

SILA Linguists® needs freelance Czech interpreters and translators for education, family, healthcare, employment and legal assignments. Interpreters who also speak Romani or Slovak are welcome.

Czech speakers in the UK include professionals and students as well as Czech Roma families, some of whom speak Romani at home. Czech and Slovak are largely mutually intelligible, but legal and administrative terms differ, so we book Czech interpreters for Czech clients wherever possible.

Assignments include school and children's services meetings, family court, healthcare, employment matters and business translation such as contracts and technical documentation.

Responsibilities

• Interpret in children's services, family and health settings with care and impartiality.
• Translate Czech legal, business and civil documents accurately.
• Interpret accurately and impartially, following the professional code of conduct and keeping all information confidential.
• Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, particularly for medical and legal bookings.
• Translate and proofread documents carefully, querying unclear source text rather than guessing.
• Attend video and telephone assignments from a quiet, private space with a reliable connection.
• Transcribe and translate audio and video recordings, such as interviews and calls, if you have the skills for transcription work.

Requirements

• Native or near-native fluency in Czech and English, spoken and written.
• A recognised interpreting or translation qualification, such as the DPSI or DPI, or equivalent experience. Membership of CIOL, ITI or NRPSI is welcome but not required.
• Romani or Slovak is an advantage.
• A current DBS check, or willingness to obtain one, for assignments that require it.
• The right to work in the UK for on-site UK assignments.
• A dependable internet connection and a confidential space for remote interpreting.
