Overview

The role

We're looking for a Fraud Investigator to join our Fraud team. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Fraud Investigator to protect the business and its customers from financial loss and reputational damage by investigating suspected fraud cases across various channels. This role involves identifying fraudulent activity, supporting victims of fraud, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards while delivering good customer outcomes.

You would report to the Fraud Investigations Manager who is responsible for providing leadership and ownership in managing fraud investigations. In the role you would work closely with other teams in the wider organisation, e.g. Customer Operations, Warehouse Operations, Fraud Strategy & Analytics, Risk and Compliance and Digital Operations.

What will you do as a Fraud Investigator at N Brown?
  • Investigate cases of suspected fraud including Application fraud, Account takeover, Transactional fraud, disputes and chargebacks.
  • Work with Fraud Operations team working fraud referral cases, to ensure effective case management and continuous improvement in dealing with emerging threats.
  • Conduct end-to-end case management of complex cases, ensuring timely and accurate resolution.
  • Work closely with the Fraud Analytics Analysts to identify emerging threats are combated through a mixture of preventative and detective methods.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders (Legal, Compliance, Risk, Customer and Fraud Operations, Fraud Strategy and Analytics, and Digital Operations).
  • Use fraud detection systems and manual review to identify suspicious patterns and escalate emerging trends.
  • Support the Fraud Investigations Manager in creating accurate reporting of fraud incidents to senior management to expedite threat mitigation.
  • Liaise with external law enforcement and regulatory bodies (e.g., Action Fraud, NCA, CIFAS and the Police) as required.
  • Provide assistance to the Fraud Investigations Manager in producing regular reports and insights on fraud activity, investigation outcomes, and risk exposure.
  • Maintain investigation procedures, case management systems, and evidence handling protocols.
  • Support continuous improvement to the design and implementation of fraud prevention controls and policies.
  • Deliver customer-centric outcomes, balancing risk mitigation with good customer outcomes.
  • Understand the threat posed by, and the opportunities presented by the use of AI, and leverage this to detect and prevent fraud.
  • Pursue continuous professional development to ensure fraud knowledge remains current and is effectively applied.
What skills and experience will you have?
  • Proven experience in fraud investigation or financial crime working for a direct to consumer lender, within consumer finance, banking, or financial services.
  • Knowledge of UK fraud legislation and relevant regulations (e.g., FCA, AML, GDPR).
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills, and strong attention to detail.
  • Understanding of fraud typologies, investigative techniques and emerging fraud trends and technologies, including the role of AI.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Familiarity with fraud detection tools and case management systems.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • You should be resilient and tenacious and be able to work under pressure.
  • It would be desirable to have worked in a fraud investigations role for an online retail lender, but not essential.

Ways of Working

We offer hybrid working which varies across the business depending on the role you're in. Our Head Office is located in the Northern Quarter in Manchester City Centre. So if you are travelling by train, tram or bus we're perfectly located, plus we're surrounded by cool cafes, trendy bars and the best places to eat!

Our working hours are 36.17 per week and our core working hours are between 10am - 4pm. Given we don't have strict working hours you can find the working pattern that's right for you.
