Job summary

Mistral is seeking a founding Engineering Team Lead for storage on our sovereign AI cloud. You will build the storage stack (block, file, object) and shape the team from day one, balancing hands-on work with people leadership.

You will decide what we build, what we buy, and ensure durable, scalable data infrastructure for training runs and compute workloads. You will lead capacity planning across datacenters, hire engineers, coach them, and collaborate with Product to align storage roadmap with

Qualifications

• 2+ years of real people leadership, hired, coached, and grown engineers.
• Built storage systems (object, block, or distributed filesystems) and understand failures during writes/backups.
• Deep distributed-systems fundamentals: durability, consistency, replication, erasure coding.
• Shipped production systems in Go; comfortable moving from C++/Rust to Go.
• Familiar with HDD/SSD/NVMe tiers and their economics.
• 8+ years building backend or infrastructure systems.

Responsibilities

• Stand up the storage stack — block, file, object — for training, sandbox, and compute workloads.
• Make build-vs-buy calls; deploy and harden vendor platforms where they win; write our own services in Go where needed.
• Own the data plane: allocation, duplication, tiering, backup and recovery, S3-compatible APIs.
• Plan capacity across datacenters and failure domains — petabytes scale.
• Build the team from zero: hire first engineers, onboard, coach, and set growth paths.
• Partner with Product Managers to shape the storage roadmap and tradeoffs.
