Job summary

Penelope in London is seeking a founding engineer with a backend focus to help build the core infrastructure for healthcare billing contracts. You will own end-to-end work from ingestion to API endpoints, balancing speed and quality while shipping features that power a transparent, auditable rules engine.

You will work on a modern Python backend stack with AWS, contributing to a platform aimed at reducing costs in American healthcare and shaping critical, scalable API services.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience and the ability to balance speed with quality when shipping.
• End-to-end ownership of defined and evolving problems.
• Strong technical skills with a backend focus.

Responsibilities

• Design the ingestion engine tracking coverage policies across payers using web scraping, LLM-powered extraction, and validation.
• Build the representation layer converting medical criteria into computable contracts (logic, CQL, deterministic eval).
• Architect API and MCP endpoints enabling low-latency, high-accuracy rule queries at scale.
• Influence architectural decisions shaping years of technical direction.
