Job summary

SILA Linguists is seeking freelance Urdu interpreters and translators for remote and on-site assignments across the UK. You will help Urdu speakers access health, legal, immigration and public services.

Expect work across hospitals, GP practices, courts and government-related settings with confidentiality upheld at all times. Applicants should be native or near-native in Urdu and English, hold a recognised interpreting or translation qualification (DPSI/DPI or equivalent), and have a DBS check

Qualifications

• Native or near-native fluency in Urdu and English, spoken and written.
• A recognised interpreting or translation qualification, such as the DPSI or DPI, or equivalent experience.
• Strong reading and writing skills in Urdu (Nastaliq) and English.
• DBS check, or willingness to obtain one, for assignments that require it.
• Right to work in the UK for on-site assignments.
• Dependable internet connection and private space for remote interpreting.

Responsibilities

• Interpret in family, immigration and child protection proceedings, keeping a neutral, accurate register.
• Translate Urdu documents written in Nastaliq into clear English.
• Interpret accurately and impartially, keeping information confidential.
• Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, especially medical and legal bookings.
• Translate and proofread documents carefully, query unclear source text rather than guessing.
• Attend video and telephone assignments from a quiet, private space with reliable connection.
• Transcribe and translate audio/video recordings if you have transcription skills.
