Job summary

Newport City Council is seeking a Senior Technical Officer to lead the delivery of Fleet Management Services and the Fleet Workshop Facility in Newport.

You will oversee a team, manage budgets and ensure compliance with road transport legislation, DVSA requirements and vehicle maintenance standards. The role involves travel across the UK, training coordination and support for sustainable transport initiatives.

Qualifications

• HND or equivalent qualification is required.
• Fleet management CPC qualification or willingness to obtain it.
• Strong knowledge of fleet and transport legislation and DVSA rules.
• Experience supervising staff and managing contracts and budgets.
• Full UK driving licence is essential.
• Ability to work outdoors and travel across the UK.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise a team, providing guidance and development.
• Oversee fleet maintenance, workshop operations, procurement and fuel management.
• Ensure compliance with road transport legislation, tachograph rules and VOL.
• Monitor fleet management systems, driver compliance and fuel usage.
• Manage budgets, contracts and service plans.
• Investigate incidents, complaints and compliance issues.
• Coordinate driver training, health and safety and winter gritting.
• Support sustainable transport initiatives and cost reductions.
• Deputise for Fleet Transport Team Manager when required.
