The James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a new Consultant in General, Gastrointestinal, and Emergency Surgery.
The appointee will contribute to the General Surgery service, with a focus on Day Surgery. The post holder will participate in the Emergency Surgery rota and have the opportunity to develop a special interest. The recently acquired Davinci X Robot will enhance minimally invasive high-quality surgery in the future.
Candidates must have CCT or be within six months of completing training, or be on, or eligible for, the Specialist Register.
The role offers a full range of clinical, teaching, training, research, and management activities expected of a practicing General and Colorectal Surgeon. This will complement the existing team.
The Trust has a new Day Theatre complex with three operating theatres and a revamp of six existing theatres. The Davinci X Robot will support minimally invasive surgery. The facilities have improved our Day Surgery service and increased theatre capacity, enabling a 24-hour CEPOD theatre. The appointee will focus on Day Surgery, participate in the Emergency Surgery rota, and perform two endoscopy sessions.
The Consultant will undertake undergraduate teaching for Norwich Medical School, with the potential for an Honorary Senior Lectureship depending on teaching responsibilities. An interest in clinical research is encouraged, with scope for leadership roles such as module lead or university leadership positions.
The Trust provides comprehensive acute care for Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, and South Waveney, supporting visitors and local populations. It is supported by community services and outreach clinics.
Serving approximately 230,000 people, the Trust is a university hospital involved in training health professionals and developing research. It has a strong performance record and a culture of teamwork, with successful national pilots.
The hospital is renowned for education and training, with close links to Norwich Medical School, contributing significantly to medical teaching. With its new university hospital status, there is a focus on fostering a research culture. A new hospital building is planned within five years.
Extended theatre sessions for elective work.
Conduct outpatient clinics, including general surgical referrals, urgent 2-week GI referrals, and follow-ups.
Provide consultation and advice to other specialties within the Trust.
Perform daily ward and board rounds, sharing workload with colleagues.
Participate in the Emergency General Surgery service, which has evolved with ambulatory care and a Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU). Join the dedicated team for this growing specialty.
Current on-call rota is 1:9, with a Hot week on call from Friday to Friday, during which elective activity is canceled. Other colleagues cover weekday nights. The following week is a warm week, managing CEPOD theatre and elective activities, with a day off on Friday.
Collaborate with other consultants for out-of-hours cover during leave.
Liaise with other medical staff and participate in clinical meetings and postgraduate activities.
Engage in continuous medical education, with the Trust supporting study leave.
Contribute to research, teaching, and audit activities, including weekly departmental teaching.
Participate in clinical governance and contribute to service management.
Adhere to the outlined Consultant work programme and scheduled NHS activities.
Maintain flexibility to adapt to departmental changes.
