Job summary

Hall & Kay is seeking a multi-skilled Fire & Security Service Engineer to join the Birmingham team. You will service, maintain, install and test fire alarm systems and integrated security solutions across the Midlands, performing PPMs, commissioning and inspections.

A strong focus on BS5839 standards, safety and quality is essential. The role requires on-site work, a full UK driving licence and the ability to work in a team or independently.

Qualifications

  • Proven and demonstrable experience in fire alarm systems maintenance with addressable and conventional panels.
  • Experience with BS5839 standards and compliance checks.
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining security systems (CCTV, access control, intrusion).

Responsibilities

  • Service, PPM, and fault diagnosis of fire alarm systems across the North/Midlands.
  • Commission fire alarm systems and conduct statutory inspections.
  • Install and commission integrated security systems (CCTV, access control, intrusion).
  • Provide technical support and remote/on-site problem resolution.
  • Maintain detailed service records, certificates and compliance docs.
  • Work with project teams and clients to deliver tailored solutions and provide end-user training.

Job description

We are seeking a skilled and versatile Multi-Disciplined Fire & Security Service Engineer to join our Birmingham team, serving clients across the Midlands region. This is an exceptional opportunity to develop and progress your career within the fire and security engineering sector, working with the latest technologies across both disciplines. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for the service, planned preventative maintenance (PPM), installation, configuration, and technical support of fire alarm systems and integrated security systems, ensuring our clients across the North receive exceptional technical service and system reliability.

  • Conduct servicing, PPM, and technical support on fire alarm systems including addressable and conventional panels across the North region
  • Perform routine maintenance, testing, and fault diagnosis on fire detection and alarm systems to ensure compliance with BS5839 standards
  • Commission fire alarm systems and carry out statutory inspections and compliance checks
  • Respond to emergency callouts and provide reactive maintenance support
  • Maintain detailed service records, certification, and compliance documentation
  • Install, configure, and commission integrated security systems including CCTV, access control, intrusion detection, and related technologies
  • Perform routine and reactive maintenance on security systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability
  • Conduct software updates, hardware upgrades, and comprehensive system diagnostics
  • Configure and install remote signalling devices, commission systems, and fully test signalling to Alarm Receiving Centres (ARCs)
  • Provide expert technical support to clients on fire and security system issues across the Manchester and North region
  • Diagnose and resolve problems remotely or on-site, ensuring customer satisfaction and minimal downtime
  • Deliver professional service on planned preventative maintenance (PPM) visits and emergency callouts
  • Provide end-user training on the effective operation and maintenance of fire and security systems
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of system configurations, installation procedures, service histories, and troubleshooting activities
  • Complete service reports, certification, and compliance documentation promptly and thoroughly
  • Keep meticulous records demonstrating attention to detail, quality, and customer service excellence
  • Comfortable being part of a team, offering support and encouraging attitude
  • Work closely with colleagues, project managers, clients, and suppliers to deliver tailored, integrated solutions
  • Participate in on-call rota to provide responsive emergency support
  • Provide occasional coverage in other areas within the North region, which may require overnight stays when necessary
  • Ensure all work complies with relevant health and safety legislation, industry standards (including BS5839, BS8494), and company policies
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, regulatory changes, and best practices in fire and security engineering
    Proven and demonstrable experience in fire alarm systems maintenance gained over a number of years
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of BS5839 standards and their practical application
  • Experience servicing and maintaining both addressable and conventional fire alarm systems, Proven experience installing, configuring, and maintaining security systems (CCTV, access control, intrusion detection)
  • Strong technical competence in networking protocols, hardware installation, and fault diagnosis
  • Proficiency in security protocols including TCP/IP, SSL, AES, and relevant signalling standards
  • Full UK Driving Licence (essential)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with clients, colleagues, and suppliers
  • Ability to provide professional service demonstrating meticulous attention to detail, quality, and customer care
  • Capable of working independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively as part of a team
  • Reliability and punctuality-essential qualities for this role
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • FIA (Fire Industry Association) qualifications or equivalent fire alarm training
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., ECS/CSCS cards, NSI/SSAIB accreditation, Certified Security Systems Professional, or equivalent)
  • Willingness to participate in the on-call rota to support emergency response requirements

  • On-Call Rota: Currently 1 in 8 weeks, with a £200 standby allowance per week
  • Call-Out Payments: Minimum 3 hours paid at applicable overtime rates for the first call-out per occurrence
  • Travel Time Compensation: Paid after 1-hour cumulative travel time (e.g., 30 minutes each way)
