Job summary

Lloyd's Register Applied Technology Group in the UK seeks a fire and safety senior specialist to provide technical services to shipbuilders and designers in the Naval industry.

The role focuses on appraising fire and safety documentation for new construction naval projects in line with statutory standards and class rules. UK SC clearance is preferred; position based in a LR UK Technical Support Office ( Southampton, London, Aberdeen or Bristol).

Qualifications

• A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register, in engineering or physical science (minimum two years programme).
• Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
• Working toward Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
• Proficiency in English language commensurate with the work.
• Knowledge of Classification/ Certification/ Verification and familiarity with IACS Rules is preferred.
• Previous experience in fire and safety matters, naval industry or technical office is essential.

Responsibilities

• Review and appraise fire and safety plans for naval ships in accordance with statutory standards and class rules.
• Provide technical and regulatory guidance to stakeholders during design, construction and lifecycle.
• Perform appraisals and provide specialist advice within budget and contractual requirements.
• Undertake project management including monitoring progress and spend against budget and contract requirements.
• Conduct occasional site visits to shipyards, client sites, testing laboratories or production facilities.
• Report incidents including near misses and safety observations and raise health and safety concerns with line management.

Job description

As part of the support the growth, development and delivery of the global LR Naval Business, we are looking for a fire and safety senior specialist to provide technical services to shipbuilders and designers in the Naval industry for the Naval Authorities, Shipyards, Equipment & Component Manufacturers, Designers and Acquisition Teams.

The purpose of this role is mainly to perform appraisal of fire and safety documentation for new construction naval ship projects. This in accordance with the applicable statutory standards and class rules set.

The selected candidate would be based in a UK Technical Support Office (Aberdeen, Bristol, London or Southampton), part of the LR Global Technical Support Office.

The role

• You currently hold or are eligible to obtain UK SC security clearance.
• Review and appraise fire and safety plans (e.g. passive fire protection, ventilation & HVAC, fire detection, suppression, fixed fire extinguishing systems, escape, lifesaving appliances, navigation lights) for naval ships, in accordance with the applicable statutory standards (e.g. ANEP 77, DEF STAN code and IMO SOLAS) and class rules.
• Provide sound Technical and Regulatory guidance to stakeholders during the design and construction phase and during vessel life cycle and participate in meetings or workshops where is required.
• Perform appraisals and provide specialist advice related to the fire & safety discipline for service delivery, research, development work, and national or international standards or regulatory bodies within agreed parameters that include budget constraints and contractual requirements.
• Undertake project management where applicable, including monitoring project progress and spend against budget and contract requirements
• Conduct occasional site visits at various shipyards, client sites, testing laboratories, or production facilities as required to finish projects.
• Report in a timely manner all incidents including near miss and safety observations (NMSO), accidents and injuries and raise any health and safety concerns with your line manager.

What you bring

• A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation, recognised by Lloyd’s Register, and within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme), or Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
• Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
• Working toward Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
• Proficiency in English Language commensurate with the work.
• Knowledge of Classification / Certification / Verification and familiarity with Classification Societies (IACS) Rules is preferred.
• Previous experience and or exposure to fire and safety matters would be essential, specifically in the naval industry or in a technical office.
• Possess agile attitude, effective interpersonal skills, solid analytical skills, and can provide technical, commercial, and people communication.
