Job description

A lot of fire engineers spend their first few years assessing external wall systems almost entirely from a laptop: photographs, intrusive survey reports, drawings that may or may not match what's actually behind the render. It's necessary work, but it can start to feel one step removed from the building itself.

Our client, a major UK contractor with an established in-house design and engineering function, is looking for a Fire Engineer to join their London remediation team with a genuinely different balance: still plenty of assessment and report writing, but with real, regular exposure to the buildings themselves, site inspections, contractor liaison, and the chance to see a facade remediation scheme move from EWS1-legacy assessment through to completed works.

THE ROLE

Working under the direction of a Senior Fire Engineer, you'll support the delivery of retrospective fire strategies and facade remediation assessments for existing HRBs across London. There's a meaningful digital thread to the role too, contributing fire safety information into BIM coordination and project models, so it suits someone who wants their technical work properly integrated rather than sitting in a separate report nobody else opens.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Supporting the preparation of retrospective fire strategies for existing buildings, including HRBs, using site inspection evidence and available records
  • Assisting external wall fire assessments and facade remediation reviews, covering cladding systems, cavity barriers, fire stopping, insulation and membrane interfaces
  • Producing fire engineering calculations and technical assessments to support design solutions
  • Contributing to BIM coordination, ensuring fire safety information is accurately reflected in project models and documentation
  • Carrying out site inspections to verify passive fire protection installation against approved design
  • Reviewing contractor submissions and product information relating to fire safety systems
  • Supporting Building Control consultations and engagement with Fire and Rescue Services
  • Maintaining CPD in line with professional body requirements and working towards chartership

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Degree in Fire Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • Some experience within fire engineering or fire safety consultancy, ideally including exposure to existing buildings or facade-related work
  • Working knowledge of Approved Document B, BS 9999, BS 9991 and BS 7974
  • Developing understanding of passive fire protection systems, particularly external wall and facade build-ups
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office and digital collaboration platforms; BIM software experience is a genuine advantage
  • Clear written communication skills and a methodical approach to technical work
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites across London and the South East

WHAT'S ON OFFER

  • £50,000 to £70,000 depending on experience
  • Regular, genuine site exposure rather than desk-based assessment work alone
  • Structured progression toward Senior Fire Engineer, with mentoring built into the team
  • Chartership support and CPD budget
  • Hybrid working, with a real presence on live remediation schemes
  • A seat inside a growing in-house function with room to develop specialism in existing building and HRB work
