Job summary

Job Title: FinOps Consultant Job DescriptionThe FinOps Consultant operates in the data and analytics space that underpins cloud cost transparency, allocation, forecasting and optimisation. This is a hands-on role, working at the intersection of data engineering, financial analysis and cloud economics. You will analyse billing, usage and telemetry data across public cloud and SaaS providers, build models that turn this data into decision-grade insight, and deliver reporting that business, technology and finance leaders rely on to manage consumption and realise value.

Responsibilities

• Analyse, normalise and reconcile billing data across AWS, Azure, GCP and SaaS providers, including Cost and Usage Reports, Cost Management exports and BigQuery billing exports.
• Develop proofs of concept for business intelligence dashboards and self-service reporting that provide ongoing cost transparency, metrics and analytics to business, technology and finance stakeholders.
• Identify, quantify and prioritise cost optimisation opportunities such as rightsizing, commitment coverage, idle and orphaned resources, storage lifecycle, data transfer and licensing, and size the financial impact of each opportunity.
• Develop and maintain cost allocation, showback and chargeback logic, including advanced cost recovery models for shared services, platforms, SaaS and other non-standard allocations.
• Develop unit economics and cost driver analytics that link cloud spend to business and technical demand metrics.
• Build forecasting, budget-to-actual and variance analysis models for cloud consumption, and investigate and explain the drivers of deviations.
• Model commitment portfolio economics for Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, committed spend agreements and credits, including coverage, utilisation, break-even analysis, expiry exposure and renewal scenarios.
• Provide quantitative analysis and scenario modelling that supports commercial insights and deal economics for strategic vendor engagements.
• Track executed optimisation actions and validate realised savings against forecast benefits.
• Define, instrument and monitor data quality, tagging compliance and allocation coverage metrics, and drive remediation activities with technology teams.
• Document data lineage, business logic, assumptions and calculation methodologies so that outputs are auditable and reproducible.
• Design basic ETL and ELT pipelines that transform billing, tagging, inventory and telemetry data into analysis-ready models.
• Translate complex analysis into concise, accurate and data-driven materials suitable for senior business and technology audiences.

Essential Skills

• Experience in a data analytics, business intelligence or financial analysis role working with large, complex and imperfect datasets.
• Advanced Excel skills, including Power Pivot, Power Query, DAX, data models and complex financial modelling.
• Working knowledge of Python for data manipulation and automation, for example using pandas and scripting against vendor APIs.
• Experience building or maintaining ETL and data pipelines and working with structured data at scale.
• Understanding of IT infrastructure and public cloud concepts, including compute, storage, network, containers and managed services.
• Ability to translate ambiguous business questions into a structured analytical approach and to confidently defend the resulting analysis.
• Strong attention to accuracy, detail and data integrity.
• Experience creating data-driven materials for both business and technology stakeholders.
• Proactive mindset with the ability to work independently in a large, matrixed organisation.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Direct Experience with cloud billing data structures and their nuances, such as AWS Cost and Usage Reports, Azure Cost Management exports and GCP billing export to BigQuery, including amortisation, blended versus unblended cost and credits.
• Familiarity with the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS) and multi-cloud cost normalisation.
• Experience with native and third-party cloud cost management tooling, such as AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, GCP Billing, Apptio Cloudability or CloudHealth.
• Experience with cloud data platforms and warehouses, for example Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery or Redshift.
• Exposure to modern data engineering tooling and practices, including dbt, Airflow, Git-based version control and CI/CD for data.
• Experience with IT cost management strategies, models and tooling, including chargeback and cost recovery, total cost of ownership and capacity planning.
• Experience applying statistical forecasting, time series analysis or anomaly detection to consumption or spend data.
• Experience articulating public cloud migration and modernisation economics to business and technology executives.
• Understanding of cloud billing, invoicing and basic accounting processes.
• FinOps Foundation certification, such as FinOps Certified Practitioner, TBM certification or cloud provider certifications.
• Practical Experience with AWS, Azure and GCP in a multi-cloud environment.
• Experience working with APIs for data extraction and automation.
• Experience with SaaS cost and usage data.
• Experience designing and maintaining ETL and ELT pipelines.
• Experience with Snowflake or similar modern data platforms.
