Employment Permanent, Full-Time

A successful specialist construction contracting business is seeking an experienced Finance Director to join its senior leadership team.

Following several significant contract wins, the business is entering an important period of growth and increased operational complexity. This newly strengthened leadership role will provide dedicated financial oversight, improve financial controls and deliver the commercial insight required to support sustainable growth.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the MD, with regular engagement at Group Board level, the Finance Director will act as a trusted commercial partner while providing independent financial challenge and assurance.

The successful candidate will take ownership of contract accounting, project forecasting, cash and working capital, management reporting, financial governance and the continued development of the finance function.

This is a hands-on and commercially influential role within a partly centralised Group structure, allowing the Finance Director to focus on project performance, contract risk and the quality of financial information used to manage the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead contract accounting, including revenue and profit recognition, cost-to-complete forecasting, work in progress, accrued income, retentions and contract provisions.

  • Review individual project performance, challenging forecast costs, variations, claims, payment applications and anticipated final margins.

  • Establish consistent project and contract review processes across finance, commercial, construction and project-management teams.

  • Provide commercial and financial assessment of tenders, proposed contracts and new customers.

  • Evaluate contract terms, pricing, cash profiles, contingencies and downside exposure before commitments are made.

  • Own cash-flow forecasting, working-capital performance and cash collection.

  • Strengthen credit governance and ensure overdue balances, retentions and disputed amounts are actively managed.

  • Produce accurate monthly management accounts, budgets, forecasts and Board reporting.

  • Present clear insight into revenue, margins, project risk, cash and forecast performance.

  • Strengthen financial controls, data governance, delegated authorities and segregation of duties.

  • Take financial ownership of the business’s ERP system and ensure the integrity of project, purchasing, cost and cash data.

  • Lead the annual audit and oversee relevant VAT, CIS, statutory and contractual finance requirements.

  • Lead and develop the Finance Manager and assess the future capability and structure required within the finance function.

  • Develop scalable, documented and repeatable finance processes to support continued growth.

Candidate Profile

We are seeking a commercially credible finance leader with strong contract-accounting expertise and the confidence to challenge senior operational and commercial stakeholders.

Requirements

  • ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification with substantial post-qualification experience.

  • Senior finance leadership experience within construction, contracting or another project-led environment.

  • Strong knowledge of contract revenue and profit recognition, cost-to-complete forecasting and project-margin assessment.

  • Experience of project review or CVR processes, including challenging forecast costs and anticipated final margins.

  • Demonstrable experience of cash management, credit control, working capital and contract-related balance-sheet positions.

  • Strong financial-control, systems and data-governance capability.

  • Experience of improving an ERP system and developing reliable management information.

  • The commercial judgement and confidence to challenge assumptions and elevate difficult issues.

  • Experience of supporting a growing business through increasing scale and complexity.

  • A practical, hands‑on leadership style and the ability to operate comfortably within the detail.

Why Apply

This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing specialist contractor at a pivotal stage in its development.

The role offers significant influence across financial governance, project performance and commercial decision-making, together with the opportunity to build a robust and scalable finance function that supports the next stage of growth.
