Join a collaborative finance team as part of an established education provider

Reporting to the Finance Director, you'll lead the finance team as Financial Controller. This full-time, on-site role in Barrow offers 35 hours per week with flexible working hours. It's an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in moving into the Public Sector / Education sector, with an open-minded approach to candidates' backgrounds, provided they possess relevant finance skills and a willingness to learn.

Your new role

As Financial Controller within the Management team, you will oversee all operational aspects of the finance function, ensuring efficient financial services across all sites in accordance with organisational policies, procedures, and regulations. Your responsibilities include maintaining the integrity of management and statutory accounting, streamlining processes, managing day-to-day financial and management accounting systems, preparing year-end financial statements, supporting the annual budget process, and producing monthly management accounts, cash flow reports, and reconciliations. You will also handle VAT returns, develop the chart of accounts, oversee supplier payments, and ensure debt collection. Additionally, you will provide timely reports to managers and auditors, lead area self-assessment and quality improvement initiatives, and keep the organisation updated on relevant legislation.

What you'll need to succeed

You should be a Fully Qualified Accountant or Qualified by Experience (QBE), with significant experience in financial and management accounting within a medium-sized organisation. Proficiency in IT, especially MS Office and accounting systems, is essential. Experience in preparing statutory accounts, managing staff, and influencing decision-making is required. Strong organisational, attention to detail, and independent working skills are crucial. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with high professional standards, are necessary. Knowledge of VAT registration, compliance, and relevant legislation will be advantageous.

What you'll get in return

The salary ranges from £38,397 to £41,898 per annum for a 35-hour week, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package including relocation support, pension scheme, 30 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays and Christmas closure, CPD opportunities, free parking, family-friendly policies, gym and fitness access, funded flu vaccinations, and eye tests. You'll join a supportive, collaborative environment that values your expertise, in a role based full-time onsite in Barrow. Part-time hours may be considered.
