Job summary

Elvet Recruitment is partnering with a construction and engineering business to recruit a Financial Accountant in County Durham. You will own statutory accounts, lead external audits and provide technical accounting support across the finance team.

The role requires ACA/ACCA/CIMA qualification and strong UK GAAP knowledge, with a proactive mindset to improve controls and processes within a busy finance function.

Qualifications

Are you a qualified accountant looking for a technically focused role where you can take ownership of statutory reporting, audit and financial compliance?

Do you have strong UK GAAP knowledge and enjoy working closely with auditors and internal stakeholders while identifying opportunities to improve financial processes and controls?

Elvet Recruitment is delighted to be working in partnership with an established construction and engineering business to recruit a Financial Accountant to join their Finance team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong finance professional to play a key role in the integrity of the Group's financial reporting and statutory compliance. You'll take ownership of statutory accounts and reporting, lead the external audit process and provide technical accounting support across the wider finance function.

The successful candidate will be commercially aware, highly organised and confident managing multiple priorities, with the technical knowledge and communication skills to build strong relationships across the business.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Prepare annual statutory financial statements in accordance with UK GAAP and FRS 102
• Manage statutory reporting requirements and ensure regulatory filings are completed accurately and on time
• Lead and coordinate the external audit process, acting as a key point of contact for auditors
• Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation and resolve audit queries
• Ensure compliance with relevant financial reporting and statutory obligations
• Support corporation tax reporting and liaise with external tax advisers
• Prepare company VAT returns
• Prepare the monthly Group Board management information pack
• Support the development and improvement of financial controls
• Identify and implement improvements to finance processes, efficiency and automation
• Assist with balance sheet reconciliations and wider financial control activities
• Provide oversight of key commercial contract reporting
• Work collaboratively with operational finance teams to improve processes across the Group
• Support finance projects, including systems improvements and process transformation
• Provide technical accounting support and guidance to the wider finance team

What We're Looking For:

• ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified
• Strong technical financial accounting knowledge
• Experience preparing consolidated statutory accounts under FRS 102
• Experience leading or managing external audits
• Strong understanding of statutory reporting and financial compliance
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines

Desirable:

• Previous experience within construction, engineering or contracting
• Experience with corporation tax for a group of companies
• Knowledge of CIS and construction-related VAT
• Experience delivering finance process improvement or automation initiatives
