We are seeking a driven and strategic Finance Manager/Finance Business Partner to join our Cardiff-based Quantity Surveying Consultancy. This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive individual who thrives in an SME environment, looking to make a tangible impact through effective financial management and business partnership.

The Finance Manager will be responsible for managing day-to-day financial operations while contributing to long-term financial planning and strategy. Key areas include expense approvals, contribution sheets, downtime allowance analysis, overhead budgeting, cash flow management, month-end and year-end reporting, VAT compliance, credit control, and reconciliation of accounts.

This role is designed with strategic growth in mind, and we are seeking someone who is driven and eager to take ownership of financial leadership. The successful candidate will report directly to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) on month-end and quarter-end statistics, providing insightful commentary to drive decision-making. They will also work closely with external parties, such as accountants and auditors, to ensure financial accuracy and compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Creating financial forecasts, budgets, and risk assessments.
  • Conducting cost analysis and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Monitoring key financial metrics and preparing variance analysis.
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Ensuring compliance with UK GAAP or IFRS standards.
  • Managing financial audits and liaising with auditors.
  • Developing and overseeing the organisation's budget.
  • Tracking spending against budgets and making recommendations for adjustments.
  • Managing cash flow to ensure liquidity.
  • Forecasting short-term and long-term cash needs.
  • Ensuring compliance with UK financial regulations (e.g., HMRC tax requirements, VAT reporting).
  • Handling statutory returns and financial documentation.
  • Leading daily financial operations.
  • Providing financial insights to support business decisions.
  • Participating in strategy development and investment planning.
  • Assessing financial risks and implementing strategies to mitigate them.
  • Managing company insurance policies and risk-related financial products.
  • Coordinating tax strategies and ensuring tax efficiency.
  • Overseeing corporate tax submissions and compliance with HMRC.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a finance management role, ideally within an SME environment.
  • Strong understanding of financial regulations, VAT, corporation tax, and payroll-related tax.
  • Advanced experience in MS Excel; experience with Sage
  • Exceptional analytical skills with a strategic mindset.
  • Excellent organisational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound financial decisions.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to present financial insights effectively to senior leadership.
