Job summary

Compact & Bale Ltd in Derby (DE6) is seeking a Field Service and Plant Engineer to install, service and repair compactors and balers at customer sites. You will diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults, perform preventative maintenance and build close working relationships with clients.

The role requires independent work, strong hands-on mechanical and electrical knowledge, and the ability to interpret schematics and use diagnostic tools.

Qualifications

• Certification in mechanical, electrical or industrial engineering.
• Ability to work independently.
• Strong understanding of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
• Ability to read and interpret technical schematics, manuals, and diagnostic tools.
• Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks and manage multiple service calls efficiently.
• Competence in using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and hands-on technical aptitude.
• Strong communication skills to effectively liaise with clients and colleagues.
• 3 years' experience in a similar role.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain and repair compactors, balers and related machinery at customer sites.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults and implement solutions.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
• Collaborate with customers to provide technical guidance and support.
• Maintain accurate service reports including parts used, repairs completed, and recommendations.
• Respond promptly to service calls and troubleshoot equipment failures.
• Work closely with the Technical Manager to innovate and improve service procedures and equipment reliability.
• Work with manufacturers' technical departments to troubleshoot issues and find resolutions.
• Ensure parts stock on the van is recorded and sufficient parts are kept to minimise repeat visits.
• Maintain good communication with all parts of the business including the sales team to ensure the highest level of customer service.
• Ensure hand tools and equipment used is maintained and in good condition.
• Ensure compliance with Health and Safety policies at all times including customer on site requirements.
