Job summary

SMT GB is seeking a Field Service Engineer to service Volvo construction equipment across Reading and surrounding areas. You will diagnose faults, perform servicing, and repair machinery on customer sites, providing proactive, high-quality support.

The role requires an NVQ Level 3 in Plant Maintenance or related field, a full UK driving licence, and the ability to travel extensively. A comprehensive benefits package accompanies a competitive salary and ongoing training.

  • Proven experience maintaining and repairing heavy construction plant and equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrics, and diagnostic systems.

Responsibilities

  • Carrying out diagnostics, servicing, maintenance, and repairs on Volvo construction equipment and associated machinery.
  • Identify and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine faults using diagnostic equipment.
  • Act as primary point of contact for customers, providing updates on machine status and recommended actions.
  • Complete job documentation, inspection reports, and timesheets accurately and in real time.
  • Maintain high standards of safety, professionalism, and compliance with company policies.

Job Title: Field Service Engineer

Location: Reading and surrounding areas

Contract: Full-time, Permanent

Are you an experienced engineer with a background in construction plant, heavy equipment, agricultural machinery, HGVs, or a similar mechanical environment? We're looking for a Field Service Engineer to join our Customer Support team, providing maintenance, diagnostics, and repair services to customers across Reading and the surrounding areas.

This is a field-based role where you'll be responsible for maintaining and repairing Volvo construction equipment, delivering exceptional customer service, and ensuring maximum machine availability. You'll work independently on customer sites while building strong relationships and acting as a trusted technical expert.

Please note: Applicants must hold an NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Plant Maintenance, Agricultural Engineering, HGV Maintenance, or a related engineering discipline, and have experience maintaining and repairing construction plant equipment. What You'll Be Doing

In this role, you'll be responsible for servicing, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing Volvo construction equipment within your designated region. Working directly with customers, you'll ensure equipment is maintained to the highest standards while identifying opportunities to improve machine performance and maximise uptime.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • Carrying out diagnostics, servicing, maintenance, and repairs on Volvo construction equipment and associated machinery.
  • Identifying and resolving mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine-related faults using technical expertise and diagnostic equipment.
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for customers, providing updates on machine status, repair progress, and recommended actions.
  • Completing all job documentation, inspection reports, timesheets, and electronic records accurately and in real time.
  • Maintaining high standards of safety, professionalism, housekeeping, and compliance with company policies and procedures.
What You'll Need

We're looking for a self-motivated and customer-focused engineer with excellent technical knowledge and a commitment to delivering outstanding service.

To Be Successful, You'll Have
  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Plant Maintenance, Agricultural Engineering, HGV Maintenance, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Proven experience maintaining and repairing heavy construction plant, with strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, drivetrains, electrics, and diagnostic systems.
  • Advanced fault-finding and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in a field-based environment.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills, with the confidence to build effective working relationships.
  • A full UK driving licence and the flexibility to travel, work overtime, and support customer requirements when needed.
