Job summary

Motion Applied in the UK seeks a Field Application Engineer to support customers using Motion Applied hardware, embedded software, and data analysis tools. The role involves worldwide travel, potential unsocial hours and weekend work, and requires collaboration across departments to maximise product value for motorsport customers in events like WEC, IMSA, Formula E, and IndyCar.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-track, remote and on-site support.
  • Represent the customer’s viewpoint internally to influence product strategy.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to resolve issues.
  • Develop and drive improvement projects with minimal supervision.
  • Diagnose hardware/software to determine system vs environment issues.
  • Identify opportunities to add value with Motion Applied products.

Purpose of the Role

The Field Application Engineer will support customers use of Motion applied hardware, embedded software, off-car configuration and data analysis software. This role may include worldwide travel, unsocial hours and weekend work.

You will interact with other departments across the company to help customers maximise the value of Motion applied products.

You will represent the customer internally, to positively steer future development and influence the product strategy.

The role will focus on providing general support across the Motion applied motorsport customer base, primarily to independent customers competing in – WEC, IMSA, Formula E, IndyCar, MotoGP. This role may also provide additional support to other already supported customers during peak periods.

Principal Accountabilities:
  • Provide support at the track, remotely and at customer premises.
  • Represent the customer’s viewpoint within Motion applied.
  • Work with internal teams to push through issue resolution.
  • Assist with improving departmental procedures and knowledge base.
  • Take on development projects as required and drive these forward with minimal supervision.
  • Diagnose hardware and software problems, probing problems to objectively understand whether it is a failure of the system or its environment.
  • Recognise opportunity to add value with additional Motion applied products or solutions
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
  • Accurately interpret observations noted in the field to advise solutions or elevate appropriately.
  • Diagnose hardware and software problems under pressure with a detailed and methodical approach.
  • Good communicator with the ability to capture information quickly and accurately.
  • Good understanding of the electronic elements of motorsport systems and powertrains, including the characteristics of typical sensors and actuators used in motorsport.
  • Experience of working trackside in a motorsport environment.
  • Experience of the following tools beneficial:
  • MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow
  • Data analysis tools such as ATLAS
  • ECU set-up tools such as System Monitor
  • Excel VBA
  • Knowledge of one or more general purpose programming languages including, but not limited to: Python, Java, C#, C++
  • Educated to graduate level and awarded a minimum of an Upper Second-Class Honours Degree (2:1) in a relevant engineering discipline. Equivalent experience will also be considered.
