Summary:

The Fiber Construction Engineer (FCE) manages initial design tasks, including permitting, pole and conduit licensing. The FCE oversees project and budget management, ensuring compliance with FirstLight’s standards. Responsibilities include managing project materials, construction, and multiple projects simultaneously, adhering to timelines, budgets, quality, and safety standards. This role supports field design, installation, and the fiber optic network, involving some fieldwork such as site walks and pole data collection.

Responsibilities:

1. Travel to customer locations for fiber project data collection and route planning.
2. Prepare preliminary OSP and ISP designs with required data for Fiber Engineering.
3. Complete Mop forms, including customer signatures, for fiber entry approvals.
4. Participate in meetings to discuss backbone, lateral, and riser fiber builds.
5. Establish stakeholder partnerships for project updates and forecasts.
6. Develop customer relationships to secure service contracts.
7. Engage in all construction phases, including bidding, assessments, site visits, safety audits, and documentation.
8. Coordinate with fiber design engineers to ensure project documentation accuracy.
9. Manage construction activities with contractors to meet specifications and delivery timelines.
10. Update Team and Project Managers on issues affecting timelines or budgets.
11. Promote open communication within the team.
12. Oversee procurement of equipment and materials, and generate Bills of Materials.
13. Review contractor work and address issues.
14. Participate in project meetings and conference calls.
15. Conduct site inspections to identify discrepancies and streamline material acquisition.

Additional Duties:

• Follow all field activity protocols and best practices.
• Handle emergency responses related to fiber impairments as part of an On-Call rotation.
• Coordinate repair efforts with NOC, Field Operations, and Fiber Design teams.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

We seek an experienced Fiber Construction Engineer with strong knowledge of fiber networks, design, and construction. The candidate should have at least 2 years of industry experience, with a proven success record in fiber installations, and be capable of managing multiple projects within timelines and budgets.

Requirements:

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering or telecommunications, or 5 years of relevant experience.
• Equivalent education and experience considered.
• Strong business acumen and experience managing large telecom construction projects.
• Deep knowledge of fiber construction and splicing/testing processes.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder relationship skills.
• Proficiency with GIS, MS Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
• Willingness to travel as needed, including overnight stays.
