Background to the Post: This position provides resident experience at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Initial posts are for 6 months with potential extension to 12 months or longer based on performance and vacancies. Opportunities for rotations to other sites may be available.
Summary: The ICU senior clinical fellow joins the registrar tier, providing full on-call coverage including weekends and nights. Airway management experience is essential.
During duty, the resident reviews and manages ICU patients under supervision, part of a multidisciplinary team, performing procedures, investigations, liaising with teams, updating relatives, and supporting ICU nursing staff.
All junior doctors collaborate closely with consultants and are expected to participate in supervising and training medical students and junior doctors in the ICU.
Outline Timetable: At least twice daily multidisciplinary ward rounds per site, weekly MDTs, daily meetings with Infectious Diseases/Microbiology consultants or SpRs. Shifts range from 9.5 to 13 hours, averaging less than 48 hours per week, with a full 7-day service.
Educational activities include fortnightly M&M meetings, weekly teaching, journal clubs, monthly quality and safety meetings, quarterly governance meetings, and grand rounds.
Induction, training, and courses are provided, including network transfer training, BASIC courses, ALS courses, and others at no or low cost.
On-call duties involve full or partial shifts, with no expected more than one night shift in six.
Qualifications:
Desirable: Additional degrees (BSc, MSc, MD, PhD)
Language: Fluent in English (OET B or IELTS 7.0)
Teaching: Evidence of teaching activity; postgraduate training in medical education is desirable.
Research/Publications: Understanding of research processes; original research publications are desirable.
Audit: Evidence of audit activity; presentation or poster presentations are desirable.
Clinical skills: CVC and arterial line insertion, intubation, chest drains; ALS or equivalent certification is desirable.
Experience in specialty/subspecialty: Minimum 12 months airway and ICU experience; additional experience in acute medicine or anesthesia is desirable.
