The post is titled Senior Clinical Fellow in Adult Intensive Care Medicine, based at Charing Cross Hospital, reporting to Dr. Simon Ashworth, Clinical Director. The role involves providing resident cover, with initial 6-month posts possibly extending to 12 months or longer, and rotations to other sites as vacancies allow. The fellow joins the registrar grade, providing full on-call coverage including weekends and nights, with essential airway experience.
Responsibilities include managing ICU patients under supervision, participating in multidisciplinary care, performing procedures, liaising with teams, updating relatives, and acting as the first contact for ICU nursing staff. The role includes supervising and training medical students. The timetable features twice-daily ward rounds, weekly MDTs, meetings, and varied shifts. The work pattern averages less than 48 hours per week, with a full 7-day service.
Additional educational activities include fortnightly M&M meetings, weekly teaching, journal clubs, and other governance and educational meetings. Induction, training, and courses are provided, including network transfer training and ALS courses. Night shifts are limited to approximately one in six.
Exceptional candidates may be considered for specialist fellowships in neuro, teaching/simulation, echo, FUSIC Heart and Lung, or BSE1, with applicants indicating their preferences. The role can be standalone or part of an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE), subject to GMC registration and approval from relevant training committees. Prior ICU or anesthetics experience (>12 months) and postgraduate examinations are required; candidates lacking these will be excluded.
