Job summary

Action for Children in Glasgow is recruiting a 28-hour per week Family Support Practitioner on a fixed-term contract until 30 June 2027. You will work 9am–4pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday to support vulnerable children and families in schools and communities.

The role requires an HNC or SVQ3 in social care or equivalent, post-qualification experience with children, a driving licence, and a compassionate, proactive approach aligned with The Promise and GIRFEC.

Scottish Friendly Wellbeing Service

Action for Children’s Scottish Friendly Wellbeing Service started in June 2023 and have secured funding until June 2027. The aim of the service is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of vulnerable school pupils in Glasgow and aimed at schools with the highest levels of need, as evidenced through Scottish Government Table of SIMD.

The Family Support Practitioner will support with the growing element of the service which is direct support for families and young people in their homes and local communities. The service has a more focussed, young person led, approach to mental health and emotional wellbeing using an early intervention approach to deliver sustainable improvements.The Family Support Practitioner will be based primarily in the school helping to identify needs earlier and take appropriate action if needed to further mental health and wellbeing services.

Interventions that will be provided by the Family Support practitioner will include:

Direct Support

The impact of direct support provided to young people who require this higher-tier intervention will be measured using the “My Mind Star” Outcomes Star tool, which assesses emotional wellbeing. This can also include direct work with families in the home or community as well being 1:1 with young people within the school.

Bouncing Back

Bouncing Back is an early resilience programme which is a lower-level intervention than Blues. It gives large groups of children and young people useful and evidenced based tools to support their wellbeing. This process also supports us to identify young people who need a higher-tier intervention, such as Blues or direct support.

Blues

The Blues Programme is an internationally acclaimed wellbeing programme for young people aged 13-19. Over six weeks, it teaches emotional resilience and reduces low mood and anxious thoughts.

Young people who would benefit from the Blues are identified through a questionnaire. The questionnaire (called a CES-D questionnaire) assesses the frequency of negative thoughts and feelings over the past week the young person has experienced indicators of low mood, anxiety and depression. Reporting more indicators results in a higher score.

Let’s talk about you

• HNC or SVQ 3 in social care or equivalent.
• Post-qualification experience of working with children, young people and families and achieving positive outcomes through direct contribution with support activities and interventions.
• Caring and compassionate and highly motivated, enthusiastic, committed, able to use your own initiative and able to build positive and supportive relationships with families.
• A sound knowledge of The Promise, in particular the Family Support Principles and Getting It Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) approach.
• Driving licence and access to a car. The job requires the ability to travel according to the needs of the job, with reasonable adjustments, if required, according to the Equality Act.
