Job summary

Hertfordshire County Council in Stevenage is seeking a Facilities Assistant to support campus and site operations. The role covers basic maintenance, compliance testing, event setup, furniture handling, cleaning, grounds work, and general porterage, with regular travel to other Hertfordshire sites.

You'll be a reliable, customer‑focused team member with a clean driving licence and good IT skills (Word/Excel), able to manage a varied workload and assist with emergency procedures.

Qualifications

  • Excellent customer service and ability to manage a varied workload.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Confident using MS Office.
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements in facilities.
  • Full, clean driving licence.
  • Basic DIY skills.

Responsibilities

  • Basic maintenance tasks including some painting.
  • Weekly/monthly compliance testing.
  • Assist with access for contractors for maintenance, PPM and compliance.
  • Liaise with Senior Facilities Officer and FM helpdesk.
  • Set up rooms for events.
  • Build furniture as required.
  • Assist with basic cleaning.
  • Grounds maintenance, weeding and litter picking.
  • Moto X track maintenance at West Hyde.
  • Key holder.
  • Support day-to-day operation of Goods in Function, including receiving and distributing deliveries.
  • Respond to facilities requests via Helpdesk and Site Management.
  • Furniture moves and porterage, including heavy lifting.
  • Waste management: cardboard and confidential waste disposal.
  • Participate in emergency evacuation procedures and business continuity arrangements.
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards.
  • Ensure excess confidential waste paper is secured.
  • Provide support at other Hertfordshire sites as required.

About the role

About you
  • Has excellent customer service skills and takes pride in delivering a high-quality service
  • Is organised, reliable and able to manage a varied workload
  • Has strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Is Confident using Microsoft Office applications, particularly word and excel
  • Possesses good problem-solving skills and a proactive approach
  • Understands health and safety requirements within a facilities environment
  • Can undertake manual handling ad physical tasks, including lifting and moving furniture
  • Can work effectively with confidential information
  • Knowledge of health and safety
  • Holds a full, clean driving license
  • Basic DIY skills
