Job summary

UK Atomic Energy Authority seeks a Specialist Materials Engineer - Experimental to advance materials for current and future fusion power plants. You will work in the Applied Materials Technology Group, delivering validated material property data and research technologies to support fusion devices and energy production.

You will independently deliver moderate to complex research, applying advanced testing techniques, and review outputs to support engineering decisions.

Qualifications

  • PhD in a STEM-related discipline or substantial relevant industrial experience in materials engineering.
  • Experience with Python and MATLAB; proficiency in C++ or Fortran.
  • Familiarity with materials modelling and simulation and data uncertainties.
  • Experience with mechanical/physical/min- tests and materials failure mechanisms.
  • Experience applying FAIR data principles and using Git/Data repositories.
  • Excellent communication; ability to mentor others.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver medium- to high-complexity experimental research on fusion materials.
  • Lead work packages, define test strategies, manage resources and timelines.
  • Develop and apply innovative materials testing methodologies and scientific computing tools.
  • Disseminate research via reports, publications and presentations.
