Job summary

Somerton Town Council is seeking an Executive Officer to serve as Town Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer, responsible for governance, financial stewardship, and delivering high-quality services to residents.

You will work with elected members and staff to shape the Council's priorities, manage the annual budget, and prepare for future opportunities, including potential devolution and cemetery planning; this is a demanding, high-visibility leadership role.

Salary : A GBP 55,801 to A GBP 61,198 per annum (SCP 44:48)

Vacancy Type: Permanent, 37 hours per week, with evening and weekends

Youll play a central role in strengthening how the Council operates: revisiting the Town Plan to confirm our long:term direction, preparing for potential future devolution opportunities, and helping us plan responsibly for longAEUR'term needs such as cemetery capacity. Youll guide councillors with clear, balanced advice, support strong governance, and ensure our budget is managed with clarity and longAEUR'term sustainability.

This is a role with genuine breadth. Some days youll be shaping strategy and advising members; others youll be working with staff to keep services running smoothly or progressing practical projects that matter to residents. You dont need to come from the local council sector : what matters is strong judgement, confidence working with elected or senior stakeholders, and the ability to balance strategic thinking with handsAEUR'on delivery.
