Job summary

Portsmouth City Council is seeking a Youth Worker to support young people aged 11–19 across city clubs and community activities. You’ll plan and lead sessions on topics such as relationships, health, and inclusion, and help young people participate in activities that matter to them.

Flexibility is essential, with 9 hours per week across 3 evenings (18:00–21:00) and occasional weekends; you may work at different sites.

Qualifications

• Experience working with young people aged 11–19 (and up to 25 for some with disabilities).
• Excellent communication skills with diverse audiences.
• Ability to plan and lead group activities onsite and offsite.
• Understanding of safeguarding and anti-discriminatory practice.

Responsibilities

• Plan and lead sessions on topics like relationships, health, bullying, racism, and substance misuse.
• Facilitate activities such as sports, dance, cooking, and creative projects.
• Manage spaces (e.g. coffee bar) and maintain a welcoming environment.
• Respond to challenging behaviour with empathy and professionalism.
• Participate in detached outreach across Portsmouth to reach young people in hotspots.
