Job summary

A North West based groundworks civil engineering contractor is seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor / Estimator to lead the commercial function across residential groundworks and civil projects. The role covers tendering, cost planning, procurement and final accounts with direct involvement from Directors.

The position offers a long-term freelance start with a permanent opportunity for the right candidate in a growing contractor and pipeline of North West projects up to £10m.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the commercial function across tenders and projects.

• Manage subcontractor procurement and packages to optimise costs.
• Cost planning, forecasting and variance analysis for multiple schemes.
• Prepare valuations, applications and payment assessments.
• Handle variations, change control and commercial risk management.
• Cost reporting and project forecasting to support business growth.
• Oversee subcontractor accounts and client/main contractor liaison.
• Prepare and agree final accounts with stakeholders.
• Identify opportunities to improve margins and commercial performance.

Groundworks & Civil Engineering Contractor | North West

Location: North West

Projects: New-build housing developments | Up to £10m

Engagement: Long-term Freelance initially, with Permanent opportunity

We are working with an established groundworks civil engineering contractor specialising in new-build housing developments across the North West.

Due to continued growth and an increasing workload, they are looking to appoint a Senior Quantity Surveyor / Estimator to head up their commercial function.

This is a key appointment for the business, with responsibility for managing the commercial and estimating function across a range of residential groundworks and civil engineering projects.

The Role

You will take ownership of the commercial side of the business, working closely with the Directors, operational teams and clients from tender stage through to final account.

Projects typically include:

• Groundworks and infrastructure
• Roads and drainage
• Sewers and utilities
• Plot works and foundations
• External works and infrastructure
• Projects ranging in value up to **£10m**

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the commercial function
• Prepare and review tenders, estimates and budgets
• Manage subcontractor procurement and packages
• Cost planning and forecasting
• Prepare valuations, applications and payment assessments
• Manage variations, change control and commercial risk
• Cost reporting and project forecasting
• Subcontractor account management
• Client and main contractor liaison
• Prepare and agree final accounts
• Identify opportunities to improve margins and commercial performance
• Work closely with the Directors to support the company's continued growth

About You

We are looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor / Estimator with a strong background in groundworks and civil engineering, ideally gained within the new-build housing sector.

You should have a good understanding of:

• Residential groundworks
• Plots, roads and sewers
• Infrastructure and drainage
• Estimating and tendering
• Subcontract procurement
• Commercial management and cost control

This would suit someone who is currently operating at Senior QS / Commercial Manager level, or an experienced QS/Estimator looking for the opportunity to take ownership of a commercial department within a growing contractor.
