Job summary

Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering in Ipswich is seeking an Estimator to support the Sizewell C project from our Suffolk offices. You will prepare cost estimates, interpret drawings, and work with the project team on pricing, risks and opportunities.

The role requires degree-level qualifications in construction management or civil engineering, proficiency with Office tools, and a structured approach to first-principles estimating within a geotechnical contractor environment.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in Construction Management or Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Proficient with MS Office and ability to interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to develop accurate estimates from first principles using structured methods.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare estimates in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Review scope and design to arrive at a costed assessment.
  • Record assumptions, identify risks and opportunities for pricing.
  • Liaise with project team and supply chain to develop methodologies.
  • Develop labour, plant, material and subcontract pricing from first principles.
  • Agree outputs with operations and schedule suitable working hours.
  • Collaborate with planner to support project programme development.
  • Interface with third parties to resolve estimating issues.

About the role

Amazing infrastructure isn't the only thing that gets built here. Incredible careers do too. Join our Ground Engineering team as an Estimator on the Sizewell C project and you can build something to be proud of. You will be based from our offices at Orwell Logistics Park in Suffolk.

What you'll be doing

The successful candidate will:

  • Prepare estimates in accordance with GSA policies and procedures;
  • Review scope and design from relevant drawings and specifications to arrive at an accurate costing assessment;
  • Record assumptions and identify risks and opportunities, including supporting the development of the risk evaluation from a pricing and budgetary perspective;
  • Liaise with members of the project team & supply chain to develop and understand methodologies and principles proposed;
  • Develop labour, plant, material and subcontract pricing from first principles within the Contractor's estimating software, Candy;
  • Establish and agree outputs in conjunction with the operations team;
  • Agree with the project team suitable working hours / shift patterns for the estimate and apply them in the assessment of cost and programme;
  • Establish and agree with the operations team key construction methodology, sequencing, access, logistics and constraints applicable to the deliverables;
  • Work with the planner to assist in the development of the project programme;
  • Support interface with third parties to identify and resolve estimating, scope and methodology-related issues.
Who we're looking for

The successful candidate will have the following qualification, skills and experience:

  • Degree qualified, or holding an industry-recognised qualification, in Construction Management, Civil Engineering or a related discipline;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, SharePoint, Excel, Word and PowerPoint;
  • Able to develop accurate estimates from first principles, using a structured and disciplined approach;
  • Strong understanding of risk and opportunity management, including its impact on cost assessment and estimating;
  • Confident communicator with the ability to collaborate, engage and influence stakeholders at all levels;
  • Able to interpret drawings, specifications, scope documents and other technical information;
  • Excellent attention to detail, with strong numerical accuracy across quantities, calculations and cost build-ups;
  • Good understanding of productivity, outputs, plant and labour build-ups and subcontract pricing;
  • Experienced in preparing and documenting estimate assumptions, exclusions, clarifications and basis of estimate information;
  • Background in a specialist geotechnical contractor environment, ideally within piling, with experience in major infrastructure or NEC contract environments desirable.
