Job summary

Retirement Villages Group at Charters Village in East Grinstead is seeking an Estates Operative to join our hands-on team. You’ll perform maintenance across village buildings and grounds, ensure safety checks, and help create welcoming spaces for residents and visitors.

The role supports general repairs, grounds care, and compliance tasks, with an on-call rota for evenings and weekends on a weekly cycle. A proactive, customer-friendly approach is essential.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in a practical maintenance, gardening, landscaping or estates role.
• Good all-round practical skills and confidence using grounds and maintenance equipment.
• A strong understanding of health and safety, with COSHH knowledge being an advantage.
• A proactive and hands-on approach, with the ability to identify and resolve issues.
• Good organisational skills and the ability to manage and prioritise a varied workload.
• A friendly, customer-focused approach and confidence interacting with residents.
• Ability to carry out physical and outdoor work throughout the year.
• Flexibility to participate in an on-call rota covering evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned and reactive maintenance across village buildings and equipment.
• Support with general repairs and report faults promptly.
• Carry out health, safety, compliance and alarm-system checks.
• Maintain village grounds: mowing, hedge trimming, planting, pruning, weeding and watering.
• Monitor plant health and safe pest/disease treatment per guidelines.
• Keep paths and walkways safe; assist with winter snow/ice clearance.
• Use and maintain tools, machinery and equipment safely.
• Store chemical supplies per COSHH and safety rules.
• Complete weekly/monthly checks and keep records.
• Participate in on-call rota and respond to emergencies as trained.
• Collaborate with colleagues to maintain high village standards.
