Job description

The Rivers School — a 6-12 co-ed independent day school in Weston, MA, just outside Boston — seeks professionals who are looking to join a dynamic, innovative, and welcoming school community.

Founded in 1915, The Rivers School serves over 530 students on a picturesque campus just outside of Boston. Rivers adheres to the belief that students achieve excellence and become their best selves when they have access to a rigorous, innovative academic program taught by a community of talented, caring teachers who make each student feel known, valued, and understood and who encourage students to take risks as they discover new passions and develop existing talents. At The Rivers School, the guiding philosophy of Excellence with Humanity abounds, in teaching and learning, performing and competing, and school operations. Valuing the agency and impact of each community member, Rivers centers care and belonging across identities, including a student body in which over 30% of individuals self-identify as BIPOC.

At Rivers, we believe that cultivating a caring, respectful, and collaborative learning environment requires a focus on equitable practices across all areas of operations that encompasses all members of our professional community and is driven by informed, reflective, and accountable leadership. Additionally, Rivers recognizes that intentionally creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community takes more than good intentions. It is an ongoing process that requires conscious effort, meaningful action, and measurable outcomes.

The Equity and Engagement Team (EET), led by the Director of Institutional Equity (IE), includes the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), the Office of Community Engagement (ComEng), and the Office of Global Education (GlobEd), which also encompasses the school's Travel Programs. The EET Program Assistant (EPA) provides administrative and program support for each of these offices, in addition to administering both the Satter Scholar Program and the Ancillary Financial Aid Program (both provide financial assistance beyond the cost of tuition). The EPA reports to the Director of Institutional Equity; it is an on-site, full-time, 40-week position (mid-August to mid-June with school vacations; some evenings and weekends required) and is eligible for employee benefits.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support directors for IE, DEI, ComEng, and GlobEd
    • Purchase and maintain necessary supplies
    • Support programming/event planning, communication, and execution (including function sheets, catering, decorations, reservations, flyers, materials, etc.)
    • Manage conference/travel registrations, accommodations, and payments for students and adults, including but not limited to NAIS and AISNE
    • Support budget tracking, consultant/speaker contracts, and other payments and/or purchases, as instructed by program directors
    • Directly support student groups and programs as needed, including advising for affinity groups and/or student clubs, as well as potential infrequent day/overnight chaperoning
  • Attend team meetings for EET, DEI, ComEng, and GlobEd, as instructed by directors
  • Collaborate with External Relations team (Parent Engagement, Alum Engagement, MarCom, Development, etc.) for EET-related events and initiatives
  • Attend and assist in setup/breakdown for selected EET, DEI, ComEng, and GlobEd events, as instructed by program directors
  • Satter Scholar Program
    • Manage all communication and scheduling with Satter students and families
      • Summer introductory letter
      • Fall, winter, and spring meetings with new students/families; meetings with returning families as needed
    • Maintain financial records for purchases, making purchases directly for families/students when necessary
    • Collaborate with Business Office in regards to direct-billing purchases and/or other non-tuition costs
  • Ancillary Financial Aid Program
    • Maintain financial records for purchases, compiling and submitting all payment requests
    • Make textbook purchases for eligible students (August and January)
Expectations for practice include:

  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and growth
  • Ability and desire to be flexible and collaborate effectively with colleagues
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and justice
  • Student-centered, team-first approach to learning and support
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate challenging conversations about emotional and/or controversial topics

Rivers encourages interest from candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, experience, and perspectives among our professional and school community. We recognize that skilled and innovative individuals follow a variety of pathways in life, and we enthusiastically invite applications from those who may have experience that meets our qualifications in non-traditional ways. Rivers offers BIPOC affinity, LGBTQ+ affinity, and white allyship spaces for professionals, as well as institutional professional development, to support and enrich our work around equity and access. In addition to mentorship from peers and direct supervisors, all professional community members benefit from a year-long onboarding program.

If you would benefit from any accommodations at any point during the application process, please contact our Director of Institutional Equity, Ms. Jenny Jun-lei Kravitz (j.kravitz@rivers.org).
