Job description

About The Role

Contract: Fixed Term until 01/06/2027

Salary: HC07 £31,067 - £35,235

Hours: 37

Location: Hereford

Closing Date: 03/06/2025

Located at the heart of the Marches, the historic border countryside where England meets Wales, Herefordshire is one of the most rural counties in England. Beautiful, unspoilt countryside, two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, historic parklands, the cathedral city of Hereford, and attractive market towns provide an excellent quality of life.

Herefordshire Council has been working with partners to develop solutions to address Phosphate levels within the River Lugg/Wye Special Area of Conservation (SAC) to improve water quality and meet favourable conservation status.

The Council has independently developed pioneering solutions to improve water quality and facilitate nutrient-neutral development to meet housing needs. One of our high-profile projects involves delivering a series of integrated constructed wetlands to provide tertiary treatment for point source pollution at wastewater treatment works.

As an Environmental Technician for the wetlands project, working with the Nutrient Mitigation Lead, your role will be:

  1. To provide ecological advice to the project team and wider internal and external stakeholders within appropriate timescales.
  2. To review, interpret, and advise on specialist ecological and environmental reports, technical guidance, planning policy, and legislation.
  3. To maintain and advance knowledge, competency, and best practices across ecological matters, including Habitats Regulations Assessments, nutrient impacts, designated sites, habitats, species, Biodiversity Net Gain, and identifying opportunities for biodiversity enhancement.

You will also work with other council teams to address the recently declared Climate and Ecological Emergency.

Benefits of working for Herefordshire Council:

  • Competitive salary, generous holiday entitlement, access to contributory pension, and staff benefits scheme, including:
  • Pension: Enrolment in the Local Government (LGPS)
  • Generous Annual Leave: 31 days’ annual leave (pro-rata) plus bank holidays; additional 10 days can be purchased annually.
  • Flexible working: Flexi-time, job-share, part-time hours, and some home working options.
  • Employee Assistance Programme: 24/7 support and counselling.
  • Payment of professional membership fees.
  • Perks: Access to retail, leisure, holiday, and health discounts, savings, and cashback offers.

We welcome applicants regardless of personal characteristics or social identity. Flexible working arrangements and reasonable adjustments will be considered.

The following candidates will be prioritized for interview if they meet the essential criteria:

  • Individuals indicating a disability (supporting the “Disability Confident” scheme).
  • Individuals indicating service in the Armed Forces or their families (supporting the Armed Forces Covenant).
  • Herefordshire care leavers indicating this in their supporting statement.

Please refer to the Job Description and Person Specification for more details. To apply, submit your CV and complete the supporting statement within the application form, referencing the job description & person specification and explaining how you meet the role's requirements.
