Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is seeking an environmental and sustainability professional to provide support across bid and pre-construction activities, helping to develop high-quality tender submissions and early-stage project planning.

You will identify environmental risks and opportunities, ensuring they are integrated into project design and delivery strategies, and will liaise with clients, regulators and subcontractors to implement robust environmental plans.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Management (essential).
  • Experience in environmental field within the construction industry (essential).
  • Experience managing people/teams (essential).
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation, ecology mitigation, licences and regulators (essential).
  • Understanding of PIEEM or IEMA membership (essential).
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel (essential).
  • Understanding of utilities/construction operating environment (essential).
  • Internal environmental auditor qualification (desirable).
  • Competent ecological surveyor for protected species (desirable).
  • Master’s degree (desirable).
  • NEBOSH H&S Diploma or equivalent (desirable).

Responsibilities

  • Deliver value adding environment projects and support ecological enhancements, including net gains.
  • Liaise with client, regulatory bodies and subcontractors on environmental management and sustainability.
  • Produce and update environmental management plans and risk assessments.
  • Produce sustainability plans per project and region.
  • Report on environmental and sustainability performance to client and Environmental Manager.
  • Contribute sustainability content to the team’s communications plan.
  • Support Project Managers in managing subcontract and supply chain to meet contractual obligations.
  • Provide guidance to senior leadership on strategic objectives.

About the role

Provide environmental and sustainability support across bid and pre-construction activities, contributing to the development of high-quality tender submissions and early-stage project planning. Support the identification of environmental risks, constraints, and opportunities, ensuring they are considered and integrated into project design, programme, and delivery strategy from the outset.

What you’ll be doing
  • Deliver value adding environment projects and support ecological enhancements, including net gains.
  • Liaise with client, regulatory bodies and subcontractors on matters of environmental management and sustainability.
  • Produce and update environmental management plans and environmental risk assessments.
  • Produce sustainability and involved plans, per project and overarching the region.
  • Report on environmental and sustainability performance to both the Client and the Environmental Manager.
  • Feed into the business stream’s communications plan with sustainability content and use communications and improvements to engage staff on an on‑going basis.
  • Support Project Managers in managing subcontract and supply chain, ensuring projects delivered as per contractual obligations and commercially viable.
  • Provide guidance to senior leadership and management on strategic objectives.
Who we’re looking for

Essential:

  • Knowledge of environment management
  • Educated to degree level in Environmental Science, Environmental Management.
  • Experience of working within the environmental field in the construction industry.
  • Experience managing people/teams.
  • Practical experience and knowledge of environmental legislation, ecology mitigation, environmental licences and consent applications and regulators.
  • Understanding of ecological matters and environmental law · PIEEM, or IEMA Membership.
  • Full UK driver’s licence and flexibility to travel.
  • Understanding of the utilities/construction/engineering operating environment ·

Desirable:

  • Internal environmental auditor qualification.
  • Competent ecological surveyor for one protected species.
  • Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • NEBOSH H&S Diploma or equivalent.
