Job summary

Onward Homes is seeking an Environmental Services Operative in Manchester to maintain tidy neighbourhoods and support community spaces. You will perform waste removal, grounds upkeep, and defect reporting as part of a mobile, multi-disciplinary team across Brunswick PFI neighbourhoods.

Training is provided; prior customer-facing experience is useful. The role operates outdoors with a proactive, professional approach, offering a permanent contract, £26,100 annual salary, and generous benefits

Qualifications

  • Essential: Educated to GCSE standard.
  • Essential: Full UK driving licence.
  • Desirable: A recognised Work Equipment certificate (Leaf Blower, Pressure Washer, Buffer Machines).

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the cleanliness and presentation of neighbourhoods in communal areas.
  • Remove rubbish from fly tipping, graffiti, litter, and hazardous materials; spot cleaning.
  • Carry out scheme maintenance duties: jet washing, minor joinery, cleaning light fittings, winter gritting, planting schemes.
  • Be visible in Brunswick neighbourhood, report defects and assist residents daily and weekends.
  • Promote a safe environment by testing lift alarms and reporting issues.
  • Manage communal paladin bins and liaise with waste partners.
  • Support community events and build relationships with residents and stakeholders.

Onward seeks a full-time operative to maintain the cleanliness and presentation of neighbourhoods, ensuring communal spaces meet high standards. The role involves waste removal, grounds upkeep, and reporting defects, requiring practical skills and a proactive approach. Working outdoors across the city, you will support local communities through visible, reliable service. This permanent position offers £26,100 annually, plus 32 days of leave, bank holidays, and a pension with matched contributions up to 10%. Prior experience is useful, though full training is provided for those with a strong work ethic and attention to detail.

About the role

The purpose of the role is to be operate as part of a multi-disciplinary mobile team to provide a professional and customer focused environmental, health & safety and quality cleaning service for the Brunswick PFI neighbourhood.

Responsibilities
  • Cleaning: Ensure the tidy appearance of neighbourhoods, including gated alleyways, by removing rubbish from fly tipping incidents, removing ‘spot’ graffiti, litter picking, removing ‘sharps’/ hazardous material and spot cleaning.
  • Deliver excellent cleanliness in schemes / communal areas by cleaning to agreed PFI standards / schedules.
  • Scheme Maintenance: Undertake scheme maintenance duties including:
    • Jet washing of communal areas – hard landscaping and external walkways
    • Minor joinery works e.g. fitting noticeboards and signs
    • Cleaning light fittings in communal areas
    • Winter gritting services
    • Assisting in horticultural planting schemes
  • Customer Assurance: Be visible in the Brunswick neighbourhood, offering assurance to customers by checking security, reporting defects in communal areas, taking action or reporting back as needed on a daily basis and also at weekends on a rotational basis.
  • Promote a safe environment by regularly testing lift alarms and reporting issues as necessary.
  • Ensure necessary management of communal paladin bins, ensuring timely rotation and regular clearing of communal waste chutes, and ongoing good communication with the Council’s waste collection partner.
  • Support community activities and events by assisting in organising events and by participating.
  • Embed and maintain excellent working relationships with residents.
  • Work collaboratively with all relevant people, including S4B partners and Brunswick stakeholders, to deliver excellent customer service.
