Job summary

Essential Employment seeks an Environmental Protection Officer in Exeter to investigate complaints relating to noise, odour and other nuisances, and to inspect premises for compliance with environmental legislation.

You will monitor air quality, assess pollution incidents, gather evidence, prepare reports, and liaise with the Environment Agency and other agencies. The role includes out-of-hours work as required, with temporary full-time hours.

Responsibilities

• Investigate complaints relating to noise, smoke, dust, odour, light pollution, and other statutory nuisances.
• Carry out inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial premises to ensure compliance with environmental legislation.
• Monitor and assess environmental conditions including air quality, pollution incidents, and contaminated land issues.
• Gather evidence, prepare reports, and take enforcement action where necessary, including service of notices and prosecution support.
• Provide environmental health and pollution control advice to residents, businesses, councillors, and partner agencies.
• Conduct out-of-hours investigations when required, particularly for noise nuisance cases.
• Maintain accurate records and case management systems in accordance with council procedures.
• Liaise with external agencies including the Environment Agency, Public Health teams, emergency services, and neighbouring authorities.
• Support environmental improvement initiatives and contribute to local environmental policies and strategies.
