Job description

We are looking for an Environmental Liaison Manager to join Thames Water on a permanent basis.

The purpose of the role is to drive performance and directly impact pollution reduction, one of the top three deliverables for Thames Water.

Our environmental performance is monitored and evaluated by regulators using measures such as compliance with environmental permits and the severity of pollution incidents, which inform our Environmental Performance Assessment (EPA).

As the Environmental Liaison Manager, you will provide technical oversight and management of the Environment Agency pollution reporting system (NIRS), including evaluating pollution challenge processes.

You will coordinate local regulatory engagement forums, build and maintain effective relationships with Environment Agency teams and across the business, manage key outputs, internal reporting, H&S, and people. You will also deliver process improvements through your team and wider business engagement.

What you will be doing as an Environmental Liaison Manager
  1. Providing technical oversight of pollution incident reports, ensuring interpretation of scientific data and timely target achievement.
  2. Owning the NIRS database, overseeing reporting and assurance checks.
  3. Leading recruitment, training, and development of your team, keeping them informed of regulatory changes, and implementing compliant ways of working.
  4. Collaborating with the serious pollution investigations team to support understanding and evidence gathering of pollution incidents in line with EA guidance.
  5. Supporting frontline operational teams, contractors, and control room processes to accurately reflect pollution incidents.
  6. Providing feedback through training, presentations, and reports to ensure proper management and response to environmental incidents.
  7. Engaging with the Environment Agency by chairing pollution review meetings and liaison forums.
  8. Contributing to pollution reduction initiatives within the team and wider business.
  9. Coaching and supporting colleagues in your area of expertise.
What should you bring to the role?
  • A passion for improving environmental performance.
  • Experience in delivering work through others, with line management experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, suitable for regulatory reporting.
  • A proactive approach, taking initiative and accountability.
  • Excellent planning and organization skills to meet deadlines.
  • Good IT literacy, especially Microsoft Office.
  • Degree or higher qualification in environmental or science discipline (or equivalent).
  • Full UK Driving licence.
What’s in it for you?
  • Salary between £45,000-£55,000 depending on experience.
  • 26 days annual leave, increasing to 30 with service, plus bank holidays.
  • Generous paternity and maternity leave benefits.
  • Enhanced pension scheme through AON.
  • Health and wellbeing benefits, including health MOTs, physiotherapy, counselling, and more.
