Job description

We are looking for a skilled officer who is competent, enthusiastic, and highly motivated to join our Environmental Protection Team.

Your duties will include investigation and response to complaints related to statutory nuisance allegations, assessing and approving s.61 applications, permitting, and responding to licensing consultations.

You must have working knowledge and understanding of the nuisance provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, knowledge of licensing legislation, and excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.

Purpose of the role

• To protect and improve health by discharging functions within Environmental Health.
• To investigate, assess, and act upon complex environmental protection, housing, and commercial issues, including enforcement and legal proceedings.
• To carry out inspections and enforcement work in the specialist areas.
• To provide advice and training for EH Technical Officers and lead cases when required.
• To report to the Head of Section/Deputy Director, Members, and MPs as needed.
• To liaise effectively with the public, businesses, departments, and agencies.
• To work independently with minimal supervision and support the team manager.
• To participate in initiatives to improve service standards and community quality of life.
• To deputise for the Team Leader and make decisions on their behalf when necessary.

Responsibilities

• Same as above, emphasizing investigation, enforcement, reporting, liaison, and leadership roles.

Additional duties

• To be fully familiar with relevant statutory provisions, processes, and develop professional skills.
• To establish effective working relationships with partners such as police, housing providers, and voluntary organizations.

Essential qualifications and experience

Minimum three years' experience in Environmental Health as an RSO or equivalent, with the following:

• Knowledge of legislative, social, and economic issues.
• Experience with ICT packages (Word, Excel) and complaint management systems.
• Ability to handle a range of cases, including those managed by an EHO.
• Proven ability to manage complex cases, serve notices, draft prosecution files, and attend court.
• Understanding supporting legislation and best practices.
• Ability to manage own caseload and travel throughout the Borough.
