Job summary

Barnet Council’s Public Health Noise and Nuisance Team is hiring two Environmental Health professionals on a temporary basis to tackle noise, pest issues, illegal dumping, bonfires and other environmental nuisances across the borough. The roles require experience in investigations, evidence gathering, and enforcing regulations under relevant environmental laws.

• Experience in investigating noise and environmental nuisance complaints.
• Familiarity with Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Control of Pollution Act 1974.
• Experience collecting evidence and preparing enforcement cases.
• Experience drafting statements, notices, and legal documents.
• Understanding of CPIA and PACE.
• Strong investigative and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage a diverse caseload.
• Experience presenting evidence in court or tribunals.
• Knowledge of public health and environmental enforcement activities.

Responsibilities

• Investigate and address complaints related to noise disturbances, construction site noise, amplified music, barking dogs, pest infestations, illegal dumping, bonfires and other nuisances.
• Respond to service requests in line with established standards.
• Conduct site inspections and collect evidence for nuisance complaints.
• Perform witness visits during office hours and out-of-hours investigations when needed.
• Draft and issue notices under Environmental Protection Act and related legislation.
• Monitor adherence to notices and enforcement actions.
• Compile evidence and documentation for legal proceedings.
• Provide guidance to residents, businesses, and stakeholders.
• Collaborate with Licensing, Community Safety, Housing and other authorities.
• Support projects aimed at service improvement.

Summary

Barnet Council's Public Health Noise and Nuisance Team is looking to hire two seasoned officers on a temporary basis to address a surge in service demand. The appointed individuals will tackle a variety of environmental and public health challenges, such as noise disturbances, pest issues, illegal dumping, bonfires, and other environmental grievances impacting residents and businesses throughout the borough. This role is ideal for professionals experienced in Environmental Health, Noise & Nuisance, or Public Protection, who are adept at conducting investigations, enforcing regulations, performing site visits, and collecting evidence in accordance with applicable laws.

Responsibilities

Requirements
