Job summary

Contract Scotland is seeking an experienced Environmental Manager to lead environmental and sustainability efforts across major energy and infrastructure projects in Scotland, including transmission, substations, and renewables. This is a site-based role with multiple locations.

You will provide leadership, ensure compliance, manage permits and consents, and drive best practice across project teams. The role offers up to £60,000 DOE, car allowance, pension, and training, with a 10/4 rotation for

Qualifications

• Previous experience in an Environmental Manager or senior environmental position.
• Relevant environmental qualification, ideally Chartered IEMA or equivalent.
• Strong knowledge of practical environmental risk management on major construction projects.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and direction on environmental and sustainability best practice.
• Work closely with site and project management teams to ensure compliance with environmental requirements.
• Ensure appropriate environmental management controls are implemented across projects and sites.
• Lead and oversee environmental incident and investigation processes.
• Review environmental and sustainability data to identify trends, risks and opportunities for improvement.
• Develop and implement environmental and sustainability campaigns and improvement plans.
• Manage the preparation and review of environmental and sustainability plans, procedures and associated documentation.
• Ensure environmental documentation and third-party submissions meet project requirements.
• Identify significant environmental and sustainability risks and ensure appropriate controls are established.
• Manage environmental consents, permits, licences and exemptions, ensuring they are obtained and maintained.
• Provide environmental reports, presentations and information to senior management and relevant stakeholders.
• Support pre-qualification, tender and environmental award submissions.
• Promote environmental best practice across project teams and the wider business.
• Work closely with environmental specialists, consultants and project stakeholders.

Location: North Scotland / Various Project Locations

Salary: Up to £60,000 DOE + flexibility for the right candidate

Working Pattern: Site-based, with 10/4 rotation available for those living further afield

Are you an experienced Environmental Manager looking for your next opportunity within major energy and infrastructure projects?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Environmental Manager to join a growing environmental team working across a major energy infrastructure framework in Scotland.

This is a newly created position, supporting a significant portfolio of transmission, substation, overhead line and renewable energy projects across the north of Scotland.

The role would suit an experienced environmental professional who can provide strong leadership across environmental and sustainability matters, while working closely with project and site management teams to ensure compliance and best practice.

The Opportunity

As Environmental Manager, you will take a lead role in managing environmental and sustainability requirements across major infrastructure projects.

The projects are spread across several key areas, including:

• Thurso and the surrounding area, including substation, HVDC converter and extension works
• Carrig, Bonar Bridge and Ederton
• Major overhead line works connecting the two substations
• A portfolio of wider energy projects including Berryburn, Blackhillock, Elchies, Clashgowar and Coire Glas

You will work across a varied project portfolio, providing environmental leadership and ensuring appropriate controls, procedures and mitigation measures are in place.

What will you be doing?

What are we looking for?

We're looking for an experienced Environmental Manager with a strong background in construction, civil engineering, infrastructure, utilities or energy.

You should have:

• Previous experience in an Environmental Manager or senior environmental position.
• Relevant environmental qualification, ideally Chartered IEMA or equivalent.
• Strong knowledge of practical environmental risk management on major construction projects.

Experience across areas such as:

• Waste management
• Water management and pollution prevention
• Ecological mitigation
• Contaminated land
• Environmental consents and licensing
• DCO / TCPA experience
• Biodiversity Net Gain
• Strong understanding of Net Zero principles.
• Experience with carbon measurement and developing actions to drive carbon reduction and efficiency.
• Experience managing and investigating environmental incidents.
• Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.

Experience in peatland restoration, conservation or reinstatement would also be advantageous given the nature of the projects.

The role is predominantly site-based, five days per week. For candidates living approximately 1.5-2 hours from the project locations, a 10 days on / 4 days off rotation can be accommodated, with accommodation provided.
