Job summary

Primary Care North Cumbria seeks an Enhanced Practice professional to act autonomously within their scope, delivering advanced care in a specialist area. The post holder will undertake independent consultations, assess and manage patients, and contribute to clinical governance and local protocols.

Based at James Street Group Practice, a large regional clinic, the post aims to improve access, continuity of care, and patient satisfaction for the local population.

Qualifications

• NMC/HCPC registered
• Prescribing qualification
• Clinical assessment and consultation skills or equivalent masters module
• Working independently within scope of practice in specialist area
• Significant experience in specialist area
• Masters level qualifications in Prescribing and consultation and Physical Assessment modules

Responsibilities

• Provide specialist and advanced professional contribution to clinical management of patients within specialist area.
• Use skills and knowledge to manage change and move from experienced to expert in area of specialism.
• Practice with autonomy and accountability.
• Assess patients, take full history, perform examinations, diagnose and provide treatment.
• Be responsible for follow up of patients under care.
• Adhere to standards of conduct and ethics for nurses and allied professionals.
• Undertake clinical risk assessments and ensure staff understand responsibilities and policies.
• Contribute to development and dissemination of local clinical protocols and governance.

Job description

The Enhanced practice professional will use clinical decision making within a scope of practice, participate indecision making amongst the wider MDT and contribute specific knowledge of anarea of practice.

The Enhanced level of practiceincludes freedom to act. Practice is autonomous within the professional scopeof practice.

The post holder will have highly developed specialist skills and advanced knowledge in a specific area of interest. They will have significant clinical experience in their area of practice.

Main duties of the job

As an autonomous practitioner they will undertake independentconsultations with patients attending with specific symptoms within the post holdersspecialist scope of practice. The will assess, examine, investigate, diagnose,treat and follow up patients within their scope of practice.

Job responsibilities

To provide a specialist and advanced professional contribution to the clinical management of patients attending within their specialist area.

Use a combination of skills, knowledge, values and self-esteem to manage change and move beyond competency, moving from experienced to expert in area of specialism.

Practice with autonomy and accountability.

To assess selected patients taking a full comprehensible history, carrying out comprehensive clinical examinations, making diagnosis and provide treatment where necessary.

To be responsible for the follow up of the patients under their care.

Adhere to the NMC/ HCPC/ professional body Code: Standards of Conduct, Performance and ethics for nurses / professional body at all times.

To undertake assessments for clinical risk within the service and ensure all staff are aware of responsibilities and related policies.

To participate in the identification, development, implementation and dissemination of local clinical protocols, policies, procedures, guidelines relating to individualised specialist service; which includes their management ensuring clinical governance is maintained.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• NMC/ HCPC registered
• o Prescribing and hold a prescribing qualification
• o Clinical assessment and consultation skills or equivalent masters module for example, mental health assessment and Management
• Working independently and autonomously within their own scope of practice, assessing, diagnosis and treating undifferentiated conditions within their scope of specialist practice.
• Significant experience and qualifications related to their specialist area.
• Masters level qualifications in Prescribing and consultation and Physical Assessment modules at University.

Specialist Skills

• Competent in cervical cytology (smear taking)
• Competent in contraception implant insertion and removal
• Competent in intrauterine contraception (coil) fitting and removal
• Contraception management
