Job summary

SEND Inclusion Support is recruiting an enthusiastic English Teacher for an independent specialist school for ages 7-16. You will plan, deliver and assess engaging English lessons tailored to pupils with a range of needs, including autism and SEMH, helping each learner rebuild confidence and love of language.

You will collaborate with a dedicated team, contribute to curriculum development, and support pupils’ reading, writing and communication skills, ensuring progress and safeguarding

Qualifications

• QTS or equivalent.
• Experience teaching English up to KS4.
• Experience supporting children and young people with SEND, particularly Autism and related needs.
• Commitment to safeguarding and pupil welfare.

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging, high-quality English lessons across Key Stages, including KS4, adapting to individual learning needs.
• Develop reading, writing, vocabulary and communication skills, fostering a love of reading and literature.
• Create an inclusive learning environment supporting pupils with autism, ADHD and SEMH to build confidence and resilience.
• Monitor progress, set ambitious targets and prepare pupils for qualifications where appropriate.
• Build positive relationships with pupils, families and professionals to support academic and personal development.
• Contribute to curriculum development and wider school life.

About the School

Our client is an independent specialist primary and secondary school supporting children and young people aged 7-16.

Pupils have a range of additional needs, including:

• Autism
• Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
• Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs (SEMH)
• Anxiety and Mental Health Needs
• Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance (EBSNA)

The school supports pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) who may have struggled to access mainstream education, lost confidence in their abilities, or found the pace and expectations of mainstream schooling challenging.

Many pupils have experienced barriers to education or periods away from school. The school's approach focuses on building positive relationships, creating a nurturing environment and helping pupils re-engage with learning.

With small class sizes and a specialist, personalised approach, staff are able to focus on individual needs and celebrate progress at every stage.

About the Role

As an English Teacher, you will play an important role in helping pupils develop their literacy, communication, creativity and confidence.

You will plan, deliver and assess high-quality English lessons that are engaging, purposeful and accessible to pupils with a wide range of abilities and additional needs.

You will teach pupils to develop their skills in reading, writing, language, literature and communication, while helping them discover the relevance and enjoyment of English beyond the classroom.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging, high-quality English lessons across Key Stages, including Key Stage 4, adapting teaching and resources to meet individual learning needs and ensure all pupils can make meaningful progress.
• Develop pupils' reading, writing, vocabulary, comprehension and communication skills, while fostering a love of reading, language and literature.
• Create a positive, structured and inclusive learning environment that supports pupils with autism, ADHD, SEMH and a range of additional needs, helping them develop confidence, resilience and independence.
• Monitor, assess and report on pupil progress, setting ambitious yet achievable targets and preparing pupils for qualifications and examinations where appropriate.
• Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, families and professionals, supporting both academic achievement and personal development.
• Contribute to curriculum development, the wider life of the school, extracurricular activities and ongoing professional development.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

• Holds QTS or an equivalent teaching qualification.
• Has experience teaching English up to Key Stage 4.
• Has experience supporting children and young people with SEND, particularly Autism and associated needs.
• Is creative, enthusiastic and committed to helping young people succeed.
• Has high expectations for both academic achievement and personal development.
• Is committed to supporting pupils' educational, social and emotional development.
• Is an excellent communicator and enjoys working as part of a collaborative team.
