Job summary

Quantum Scholars in Wokingham is seeking a patient SEND English Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one English and Literature tuition for a secondary pupil with SEND.

You will adapt your teaching to meet individual needs, build confidence and resilience, and work with parents and professionals. This in-person role requires safeguarding checks and a valid right to work in the UK.

SEND English & Classics Tutor - Wokingham

Location: Wokingham, Berkshire

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND English Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a young person in Wokingham.

We are particularly interested in tutors who have strong English subject knowledge and are also able to support with Classics. The successful tutor will be confident adapting their teaching style, pace and resources to meet the individual needs of a learner with SEND, while making lessons engaging, accessible and relevant to their interests.

The role will focus on supporting academic progress, confidence and engagement, while helping the young person overcome any barriers they may experience with learning.

Experience supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs would be highly desirable.

This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

The role may involve:

• Providing personalised one-to-one English tuition to a secondary-aged learner.
• Supporting the learner with English language and literature.
• Supporting Classics where appropriate, depending on the tutor's subject knowledge and experience.
• Developing reading, writing, comprehension, spelling, grammar and vocabulary skills.
• Supporting the study of classical literature, history, mythology and related topics where appropriate.
• Planning engaging and appropriately challenging lessons across English and Classics.
• Adapting teaching methods, resources and lesson pace to suit individual SEND needs.
• Identifying gaps in knowledge and supporting the learner to develop key skills.
• Building confidence and encouraging a positive attitude towards learning.
• Using the learner's interests to make lessons engaging and meaningful.
• Supporting GCSE preparation and exam technique where appropriate.
• Helping the learner develop greater independence and resilience.
• Creating a calm, supportive and positive learning environment.
• Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
• Building a positive and trusting relationship with the young person.
• Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner's education.
• Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Essential requirements:

• Strong English subject knowledge at secondary level.
• Ability to support Classics, ideally with relevant subject knowledge or experience.
• Experience working with children or young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Experience providing one-to-one educational support is desirable.
• Ability to adapt teaching approaches to suit individual learning needs.
• A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
• Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with young people.
