Job summary

National Energy System Operator Limited is seeking a Policy Development Lead to join the Connections Technical Policy team. You will work with the COAT, network owners and customers to develop policy around efficient connection solutions meeting customer needs and technical standards.

You will contribute to shaping policy for connections, support technical queries, and help drive innovation in the electricity system as NESO transforms the energy landscape in Great Britain.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of codes related to connections – SQSS and Grid Code.
  • Experience undertaking power system analysis and connections studies.
  • Experience using Power System Modelling and Analysis tools such as DIgSILENT Power Factory and PSSE.
  • Strong communication and report writing skills with stakeholder management.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with COAT to ensure templates are fit for purpose and compliant with system and Grid Code requirements.
  • Manage technical customer queries in collaboration with customer teams.
  • Support customer contract managers and compliance managers with addressing technical queries from customers in the connections process.
  • Support other departments within NESO on technical queries related to connections process.
  • Contribute or lead technical innovation within Connections.

Due to continuous growth, we are looking for a Policy Development Lead to join us at NESO. As a Policy Development Engineer in the Connection Technical Policy team, you will work in partnership with the Connections Operability Assessment team, network owners and customers as part of the connections process to develop policy around efficient connection solutions that meets both the customer needs and the technical standards (SQSS and Grid Code).

We facilitate the connection of generation and demand onto the system, enabling the UK to meet its net zero system operation ambition whilst ensuring the network remains safe. We are continuing to implement connections reform and are looking to grow the new Technical Policy team which will have a critical role to play in the future design of the electricity system facilitating the pathway to net zero.

Key Accountabilities for Policy Development Engineers
  • Collaborate with COAT to ensure the generic appendix F templates are fit for purpose and compliant with the system and Grid Code requirements.
  • Manage technical customer queries in collaboration with the customer teams.
  • Support the customer contract managers and compliance managers with addressing technical queries from customers throughout the connections process.
  • Support other departments within ESO on technical queries relating to the connections process.
  • Contribute/ lead the technical innovation within Connections.
About You

Passionate about the energy industry, the mission to achieve net zero carbon operation and willingness go the extra mile to deliver great service to our customers. Understanding of codes which relate to connections – SQSS and Grid Code Experience of undertaking power system analysis and connections studies with a good understanding of the principles of power system planning and operations (not essential). Experience of using Power System Modelling and Analysis tools e.g., DIgSILENT Power Factory, PSSE etc. (not essential). Strong communicator with excellent stakeholder management and report writing skills. #LI-MM1
