Job summary

Sotheby’s is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead and grow an engineering team across multiple time zones, based in London. You will partner with product leadership to shape roadmaps, guide architectural decisions, and ensure high-quality, reliable delivery of live auction platforms and related systems.

You’ll deliver through others, mentor engineers, and maintain a clear path for growth while upholding observability, testing practices and operational health.

Qualifications

• Proven engineering management experience with distributed or remote-first teams across multiple time zones.
• Strong technical background to guide architectural and infrastructure decisions.
• Experience partnering with product management to define priorities and deliver outcomes.
• Track record of hiring well, onboarding effectively, and building teams that retain people.
• Focus on engineering quality: observability, analytics, testing practices, and reliable delivery.

Responsibilities

• Own the health, output and growth of an engineering team distributed across time zones.
• Partner with product management to shape your team’s roadmap and balance feature delivery with health.
• Set and maintain the quality bar for your area of the platform and how work is reviewed.
• Run the delivery cadence: planning, prioritisation, retrospectives, and day-to-day blocking.
• Manage dependencies across teams and contribute to engineering-wide initiatives.
• Handle incidents with follow-up and ensure timely fixes; provide honest feedback to engineers.
