Job summary

An experienced Engineering Manager (CEM) is sought to lead a civil engineering and infrastructure team in the UK. The role centers on technical leadership, coaching, and ensuring safe, compliant delivery across multiple projects.

You will act as CEM on rail contracts, appoint CRE and DI for temporary works, and drive continual improvement of engineering processes and outputs while maintaining strong client relationships and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Must be a Chartered Civil Engineer (ICE) or equivalent.
  • Senior-level experience leading civil/rail engineering teams.
  • Proven track record coordinating temporary and permanent works design.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop an established team of engineers with a focus on CPD.
  • Mentor and model technical excellence across the team.
  • Manage the design coordination of temporary and permanent works across diverse projects.
  • Provide technical management and QA across outputs.
  • Nominate CRE and CEM on rail frameworks and contracts; act as CEM when required.
  • Appoint temporary works roles and act as DI for temporary works when needed.
  • Ensure engineering compliance across the business; drive process improvements.

Candidate Responsibilities:
  • Lead, coach, and develop an established team of engineers, creating a supportive environment where junior members can grow and thrive
  • Act as a mentor and technical role model, championing continuous professional development across the team
  • Managing your team of engineers, you will monitor and provide guidance to the team coordinating the design of temporary and permanent works across a diverse project portfolio
  • Provide technical management and quality assurance across all engineering outputs
  • Assess competencies and nominate contractors responsible engineers (CRE) and contractors responsible managers (CEM) on rail frameworks and contracts
  • Act in capacity of CEM on rail contracts where required, drawing on broad project experience to build client confidence and trust
  • Appoint temporary works roles and act in capacity of temporary works designated individual (DI) for temporary works where required
  • Take ownership of engineering compliance across the business
  • Lead the ongoing development of engineering processes and systems
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement practical, effective improvements, with genuine autonomy to shape how the team works
Candidate Requirements:
  • A proactive, improvement-minded approach, comfortable identifying inefficiencies and confident implementing change
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with clients, designers, and colleagues
  • Chartered Civil Engineer (ICE, or equivalent), with senior-level experience
  • Broad experience across a range of project types, including experience relevant to rail framework contracts
  • Proven experience coordinating temporary and permanent works design
  • Experienced and already acting in the capacity of CEM
  • A track record of managing, coaching, and developing engineering teams. You enjoy bringing people on, not just reviewing engineering deliverables
  • Strong working knowledge of engineering compliance and quality processes
