Job summary

Velociti Solutions in Oldham is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of software engineers, drive deliverables, and shape architectural decisions. You will maintain technical depth to guide design choices, establish coding standards, and coach junior developers while embedding AI-assisted tools into daily practice.

This role emphasizes collaboration with product and project teams and risk management to meet delivery timescales.

Qualifications

Proven experience managing or leading a team of developers with 1:1s and objective setting.
Extensive full-stack development skills: front-end (JS frameworks) and back-end (.NET).
Experience working with an AI augmented environment.
Experience delivering low-latency, API-driven web services and responsive web applications.

Responsibilities

Guide technical direction and architecture for your area with well-reasoned decisions.
Line-manage a team of ~7 software engineers with regular 1:1s and performance reviews.
Define and uphold coding standards and best practices across the team.
Act as escalation point for production/technical incidents and drive root-cause analysis.
Translate product priorities into a technical roadmap and ensure timely delivery.
Maintain and publish technical documentation across the SDLC.
Foster culture of code/architecture reviews, learning and knowledge sharing.
Develop understanding and use of AI within the engineering team.
Support other teams to meet privacy, security and regulatory standards.
Coach and mentor junior/mid-level developers and support their career development.
Plan workload against delivery timescales and shape team working practices.
Undertake additional duties as reasonably required.

Role Purpose

As Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of software engineers as a dedicated people and delivery leader. Your impact is measured through the performance, growth and output of your team. You will keep enough technical depth to guide architectural decisions, hold the team to a high standard and ask the right questions to enable the engineering team to achieve outstanding results.

You will help the team work efficiently, collaborating with product and project teams aligning your team workload to delivery timescales and escalating issues to the Chief Technology Officer as needed. You will also support the embedding of AI-assisted development tools into daily practice.

Key Responsibilities

Guide the technical direction and architecture for your area, ensuring key design decisions and trade-offs are made by the right people, well-reasoned and properly documented.
Line-manage a team of c.7 software engineers: regular 1:1s, objective setting, performance reviews, and identifying and addressing performance challenges, providing further support where required.
Define and uphold coding standards, patterns and best practice across the team, reviewing code to ensure delivery of reliable, secure and maintainable software.
Act as the escalation point for production and technical incidents affecting your area, driving root-cause analysis and follow-up improvements.
Represent engineering in cross-functional planning, translating product and business priorities into a realistic technical roadmap for the team.
Own the quality and currency of the team's technical documentation, wikis and release notes across all stages of the Software Development Lifecycle.
Establish and sustain a culture of code and architecture review, continuous learning and knowledge sharing across the team.
Developing the understanding and use of AI within the engineering team.
Support colleagues in other teams, ensuring that our software meets the required standards for privacy, security, compliance and regulation.
Act as the first point of escalation for the team, coaching and mentoring junior and mid-level developers and supporting their career development.
Plan and allocate team workload against delivery timescales.
Shape team ethos and ways of working, embedding consistent engineering practices across the team.
Undertake any additional duties as reasonably required.

Requirements

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Experience delivering low-latency, API-driven web services and responsive, cross-browser web applications.
Able to communicate clearly, both verbal and written, with technical and non-technical audiences, presenting proposals and solutions, and to take end-to-end ownership of technical work.
Comfortable giving and receiving constructive feedback.
